Yay, ochina, we've got some global people in here too. Awesome welcome. All of you. So if you are here with us in this webinar, it means you are an admitted student. So I'm on it. Also say congratulations. You need to be super proud of yourselves. We had a really competitive year. It was tough to do what you did. The minority of students that applied were admitted to UC Davis, we admitted.
A little less than 40% of the total students that applied, so you are in that elite minority. Awesome achievement. Now what does that mean? I know that if you were able to do that and get into UC Davis, it probably means that you were also admitted to some other really awesome institutions as well. So I'm going to also congratulate you on that if that's your case.
So that means that you have options, and so tonight's webinar is all about how to approach that big decision that you need to make by May one of how to choose a school. So there's a lot going on at UC Davis right now, in spite of everything that's happening in the world, we are doing our best to still connect with students and help you with that big decision that you have to approach. We have a long menu of webinars that I hope you have seen on the page that allowed you to register for this one.
I would love to see each of you register for at least two webinars before May 1 because we want to make sure you have all of the tools and information that you need to make a really strong, educated, confident decision.
So we have webinars about all about UC Davis and the next steps after you are admitted and steps after you say yes to UC Davis if you choose to do so. We've got a web and are called ask me anything which is literally just that and we have this web and R, which is a really big picture web and are just about approaching the decision of where to go to school. So if you have options when we talk to students, oftentimes the conversation.
Goes back to you, the student. Uhm, an we talk about something called fit. You know that concept of college fit? If you are, if you go to school and you have counters a lot of times you will hear your counselors talk about finding the best fit for you. because I believe that there's no such thing as the perfect University. There's no such thing as a one size fits all University.
Uh, and you really have to be super true to yourself when you approach this decision. My job and Alex is job when we talked to students is not to convince you to choose UC Davis or that UC Davis is the perfect institution for everybody. I know that it's an awesome institution and I also know that when we read your applications and we made the decision to admit you all that we think. UC Davis is a good fit for you and that you will be a good fit for us. But now you have to decide.
If that's mutual because it's it's definitely a two way St.
Before I go any further, I want to just give you a heads up about what to expect in tonight's webinar. This is what we call a moderated webinars, so the chat is moderated, and that means that when you type something into the chat, it goes into a Q and Alex is going to help me decide which are the questions that are going to have the most broad appeal. That means that a lot of students have the same question on their minds.
We need to make sure we take care of those questions 1st and then she will also help me answer answer your questions in the chat. So if there is there are things that are a little bit more specific or that I won't be able to address out loud during the presentation. She's going to help with those. Also, if you don't see your question.
Listed in the chat, that doesn't mean that we're not going to address it. It might be addressed through the presentation, or it might be addressed as an answer to somebody elses questions. So pay attention to the answers that we give to other students as well, because they may also answer your question.
OK, I think that's good. I don't want to spend too much time on the PowerPoint itself. I'm going to sort of breathe through the slides to save time at the end for your questions, 'cause your questions are going to be way more interesting than words and pictures on a PowerPoint. So let's just jump in and see how this goes. OK, so when we talk about college fit, we talk about approaching the decision in a very holistic way. There's always questions that you have to ask yourself.
Because you know, you better than anybody else.
Alex Svensson
06:08:04 PM
There's also closed captioning if anyone needs it. You can click on the "CC" icon in the top right of the screen and the captioning will appear in the chat box
And there are questions that you need to share an ask to your family members and the people that care most about you.
Um, because this is a big decision and you're not really just shopping for a school. This is not about just picking a place where you're going to take classes for the majority of the students that come to UC Davis, they will live in Davis, CA an for you for many of you, that means moving away from home, away from the city that you grew up in, away from the family and the other things that you are familiar with. And so it's a really smart thing to consult with your family members and the people who love you and know you.
Best sometimes that means your teacher is your counselors. Extended families any mentors that you have because it's a life decision for you. Maybe this is the first time your life that you're making that kind of decision that might actually change the whole direction that your life is going to go, so you have to really look at it in a very 360 degree way. And then there are some questions that you have to make sure to ask the University and don't just ask UC Davis. Make sure that when you are considering those other options as well.
Any other school that you're taking a look at? You have the right and the responsibility to know everything with your eyes wide open before you say yes to any school. So there are questions that we think are really smart to pose to any University representative that you're talking to, or at least get find those answers through the University websites. And that's what we're going to be talking about tonight when we talk about college fit. There are five main factors to consider. There are the academic factors, social factors, environmental.
Financial and professional. We're going to go into each one a little bit in depth.
The first one is academic, so this one is about you as a learner and some good questions to ask any University that you're shopping for is does. The college or University offer my field of study, so I'm going to assume that when you chose to apply to UC Davis, you probably checked that we offer the major that you are most interested in studying, so we can check that off the list right now. But then a follow-up question would be, does the University let me have the chance to explore?
Outside my major? Or what if I kind of don't like the major that I thought I liked and I want to change my mind? Is the does the college give me the chance to do that? So at UC Davis? That's a very common thing. The majority of our students will change their major at least once before they graduate and it's.
Very common thing to see students double majoring, so there's so much flexibility an you can really customize your your field of study and choose your own adventure. We've got students that double major. You could even triple major. I think that's kind of nuts. You can double major in minor, major, and minor. You can major in things that are completely different from each other, so I know someone who majored in engineering and Minored in music.
Or you could major in managerial economics and Japanese, so whatever floats your boat. But definitely you want to make sure that you have the opportunity to do that.
Hi everyone, it looks like we dropped connection for a second outlook. Dolly is back with us so she's gonna take over.
Yeah, sorry guys, lost my connection there. I love technology and it loves me back.

So we were talking about those academic factors. The next question is to ask yourself, how do you learn best? Again, nobody knows you like knew you know you, so you need to ask yourself, do I need a school that will let me have the chance to be in large lecture halls where there's a? There's one Rockstar professor standing in the front of the room and they're talking at me an I'm basically an audience member. Taking notes? Is that my jam? do I like that the best or do I prefer smaller size classes? do I like a seminar style?
Socratic method classes so again, just be true to yourself if if you are the type of student who really needs a small learning environment an you want like say no more than Max 20 students in a class, I'm going to be very honest with you that you see Davis is a large University so many of the classes that our students will take in the first year or two will be those large lectures they can be over 100 students in a lecture Hall, but what we do?
To try to make sure that all students are learning the material and have the opportunity to be successful is that wherever there's a professor teaching a large lecture, that professor is going to have a graduate assistant.
Brenda Salmeron
06:13:42 PM
Yes and from Indio
Who breaks down the classes into smaller sections and then re teaches the material to smaller groups of students. An checks for your understanding to make sure that you that you get it and that you're in good shape to move forward in the course, and then another question is what if I need academic support? So this is where we have to be really honest with ourselves. College is different than high school.
So in high school you may have a lot of people around you who are super invested in your success and they may chase after you to make sure that you don't miss deadlines and you've got your parents and your family members in your counselors around reminding you to get things done on time, reminding you to check out this resource or or get whatever project done and they're really holding your hands through a lot of these processes. College is going to need you to be.
A little bit more independent.
And we're going to need to see that students are taking a lot more initiative.
Then they did, maybe at the high school level, also something that's different between high school and college. No matter how awesome of a student you are. And again, UC Davis is a highly selective University, so most of the students that are being admitted are awesome in high school and they are high achievers. But there is a learning curve when you move from high school to college and the classes are going to be different and the instruction style of your teachers is going to be different. It's a different way of learning a different way of studying.
You're just adapting to a lot of different knew factors, so you kind of have to assume that there will be moments where you're gonna need a little bit of extra help. And at UC Davis we have a tutoring center that's on campus and you can walk in there at anytime. It's included in your fees. We think it's a really good idea to take advantage of that, even if you think you don't need help, and these are people who will sit down with you one on one. They will help you with things like writing.
In chemistry and math, and even things like time management or money management, because there's a lot of new things that we have to understand and get used to in college.
So make sure that that's available. The next factor is social.
Some good questions to ask here. What kind of clubs or organizations does the University provide? So we are not just academics, we are social beings. An I'm going to say that right now, while all of us are self quarantining and social distancing, we're realizing more than ever how much we need that socialization and that ability to connect with other humans. So at UC Davis we have over 800 student clubs, that's
a lot, so think about how many clubs you all have in your own high schools and compare that to the 800 that we have a pretty sure that we win with that, but that tells you that it's really easy for students to connect with others and really easy for a student to create a club or organization on any topic or theme that they're interested in.
Another question to ask any school you're looking for is will I be able to find my community there? And when I say community, I can. I can mean it in a very broad sense, like my community of people who are from my same culture group or my same faith group. Or it could be in a very micro sense. Will I find a circle of friends that I can hang out with every day after class? Um again, it's College and college is different, so it's going to rely a little bit on you to be.
Proactive and take some initiative to reach out. Put yourself out there in so that you can make friends, but we want to make sure that the environment at whatever school you're looking at is going to be inclusive enough and welcoming enough so that you feel empowered to do that. UC Davis is the 8th most ethnically diverse University in the whole country, so we feel that you're going to have an easy time finding people from every ethnicity, every language background.
People who share your culture, people that are different from you so that you can learn from there. It's really diverse, is probably my most favorite thing about UC Davis. And then the last question on this slide that I think is super important is what can you do if you're feeling down? So again, because it's such a big adjustment.
When you're moving from high school to college, there may. There may be moments where you're feeling, not yourself. You're feeling a little bit of- just trying to navigate a whole new system and trying to find your niche can be can put some pressure on you. It might stress you out sometimes, so a good question to ask is, does this school offer me opportunities to find emotional support? Social support? Psychological support? Is there someone or an office on campus that I can?
Go to an find someone to help me sort through something so that I can feel on my game again and I can feel like I'm included an welcomed again. And so at UC Davis we have a Health Center that does exactly that. These are people who, who, who, who's doors are wide open and just waiting for students to walk in and talk to them about whatever issues they are dealing with, just to find a friendly, supportive person to help them figure out things and feel that they can just go back out there an.
An Excel in their classes and feel energized and thrive.
And another factor to consider is environmental. This is essentially about just where is this University located and what is it. What is it like to physically walk around on this campus? What's the geographic location like? So um, for many of our students, they're coming from California. You already know what the climate is like. We're pretty lucky in that regard. Other students they may be coming from other parts of the United States where they don't know quite what to expect in terms of climate. Never.
Underestimate the importance of weather and seasons in whatever choose your your way. Whatever school you're thinking to attend, because it can affect your ability to feel comfortable and focus on your job as a student. I know for myself I've got really bad blood circulation, so I get cold really easily whenever the temperature drops below 80, I start to get chilled so I know I would never be able to do well at.
Any school, maybe in some of the colder states in the United States or in Canada or in the UK, you have to know that that piece of you better than anybody an ask yourself that question and never undermine the importance of it. Another question to ask here is what's the neighborhood that the University is located like? Will I feel safe to walk around by myself so you see Davis?
Is a college town. You see Davis is the only true college town. Actually in the whole UC system. And that's another one of my favorite things about Davis. So when I say College Town, it means that everything is really student centered, student focused all the shops and businesses and restaurants in the town of Davis. Many of them are run by students. They get life of the student. Some of them will stay open later hours around your exams to make sure that.
You don't feel rushed when you're trying to study and do your work.
Uhm, and then how will you get around? So as a college town it's really easy to navigate. Students don't need a car to get around Davis CA. Our students will either get around walking or by bicycle. I'm sure you probably knew or pretty famous for bicycles were the bicycle capital of the.
We tire United States uhm. So a lot of our students will choose that as the mode of Transportation. If you don't want to write a bike and you don't feel like walking, we have a public bus system that is student run. Also included in your fees that you can hop on an it'll get you anywhere you need to go around Davis.
Another factor is financial, so this is a big one, uhm?
It's really important to take this to consider this in conjunction with your family members because we want to make sure that when you're choosing college you are going to be able to absorb those tuition fees comfortably. I don't believe that it does anybody any good to try to persuade you to say yes to a University. If if the fees are going to be something so beyond your families means that it's going to stress you out. We want your number one focus to be.
Exciting as a student, we want you to be able to go to class and feel like you can get involved in clubs and organizations and study and do projects an do research and all those awesome things that you see. Davis is known for without the added pressure of wondering how am I going to pay for my books? How am I going to pay for my meals? So always consider that before you say yes to any University. How much does it cost for a year to attend and then?
If the cost is is a lot you want to ask yourself, what's the return on my investment? So these are mature kind of topics that I know that your family members in your parents will be very appreciative if you if you open the conversation with them to consider this, we believe that the return on the investment for UC Davis students is very high. Over 80% of UC Davis students will find a job in their fields before they even graduate, or at least within the first six months of graduation.
So they don't struggle. They're very fortunate in that regard, and then How do I apply for financial aid? How do I apply for scholarships?
And then the last question is, does the University help me find a job? So at UC Davis we have the internship and Career Center. Their job is to match you with opportunities so that you can do internships in your field to make you look really good on your future resumes.
And that leads me to my last slide here about the professional factor some questions to ask are how can I get an internship? Is that a hard process? Is it an easy process? Is it super cutthroat and competitive that I'm going to have to stand in line to get an opportunity to do an internship when you applied to college? I think that your goal wasn't just to get into college, your goal. Your goal is actually to get out of college and start your future careers.
Nancy Gutierrez Ceballos
06:25:00 PM
What do you mean by a return on investment?
So you want to put yourself in a school environment and at a University. That makes it easy for you to build yourself professionally so that you don't struggle once you get out to find a job and start your careers.
Oh, we have a question. Someone's asking what do you mean by the return on your investment? So when we talk about investment?
In the context of a University, we're talking about the money that you're going to spend on tuition. So universities are not free yet, at least not in the situation that many of our students are in. You have to pay an amount of money for tuition to be able to attend that University. That money that you pay is your investment, so a good investment means that the money that I've spent at the beginning, I get to see it come back to me at the end.
Nancy Gutierrez Ceballos
06:26:10 PM
Okay, thank you :)
Maybe in a nice salary in my future career. That's the return. It comes back to you at the end, so that's I'm not sure if I if I made it easier to understand. Hopefully a little bit, but it's just basically that you get to see a reward from the money that you spent at the University. That's the return on your investment. Um, another question to ask is, are there research opportunities so you may or may not be aware, but the University of California is the research institution.
For the state of California. That's why when you turn on the TV news like you're watching CNN or even any of the local news stations, you hear the name you see. You see a lot, especially you see Davis. I know that UC Davis right now is really busy working on a vaccine for coronavirus, 'cause we're awesome at those kind of things. So does the University of forward knee opportunities where I can do some of that research. And the answer is yes, over 70% of UC Davis students will do at least one research project before they graduate.
It's a very easy process, there's different ways to go about it. You could be sitting in class and your professor will be talking about some awesome research that he or she is engaged in and they start bragging about it and you get excited and you feel like I want to be part of that. You can just approach your teacher after class and said you need a helper and boom. There is there's a research opportunity for you.
Other than that, we have a center called the office of undergraduate research right on campus.
And what they do is help help you find research activities on campus that are in in alignment with your field of study, and those again, are the kinds of things that look really sweet on your future resumes up. Another question to ask is, are there opportunities to connect with companies in my field so you see, Davis has recruitment fairs every quarter. There's these huge recruitment fairs were over 500 companies and organizations will come to campus.
And talk to our students and they get snatched up for internships. They get information on how to find a few a job with those companies. I know that a lot of students are excited you whether or not you're from California. You know that there's something called Silicon Valley in Northern California and they are in our backyard and companies like Google and Oracle and HP and genetic. They know us very well. They know our students. They know the quality of student that we produce, and a lot of our students will find internships there.
And then the last question is, what if I want to go to grad school? So a lot of students before they even finish their undergrad? They're already looking forward to things like master's degrees or pH DS or medical school or vet school. So you see, Davis is very undergraduate focused in that we do a lot to support our students to prepare themselves for the next phase of their life after they finish their bachelors degrees. So we have.
Over 100 graduate programs. We have six professional schools. We have the School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, School of Business, Management's full of Education, School of Nursing. There's a lot of opportunities in that regard. An also professional staff whose job it is to help you get prepared for things like your Graduate School entry exams, your emcat, yarrell sack.
And again, those are all included in your fees, so we want to make sure that you take advantage of those. I want to remind you once again that.
The world is your oyster, and when you come to a place like UC Davis, as large as we are, we are the biggest of all the UC campuses.
You have a lot of professional staff and offices and resources to address every aspect of your life as a student, but they're not going to come chasing after you, so you really need to show that initiative and be really proactive to seek them out. They're going to greet you with their arms wide open. Their doors are always open, but you have to seek them out and then once you do that, they will hook you up and you were going to be in much better shape because of it.
I don't want to take up too much more time. I'm wrapping up now. I just want to tell you guys, don't forget that we have more webinars coming up between now and May 1 May 1 is that big day when you have to make your decision by sign up for at least another one. Other web and R after this one. If you haven't done that already, at least two and then I hope you're all watching Aggie experience live that sansum. It's on Facebook live. We've been promoting it all over social so make sure you're watching that.
We have experts and zan Rockstar students from across campus sharing about all the things that they do in the different departments and things like housing and dining and all the different community centers that we have on campus are also represented an it's a lot of fun, so make sure you're watching that as well.

What are the pros and cons of the quarter system versus the semester system?
If there are any questions that we don't get to tonight in this web and art, you can always go to the admissions website fromucdavis.edu and ask an advisor and a real life person will respond to you as soon as possible. We want to make sure that you have all of the tools and information that you need so that you can approach that decision with full confidence and be really excited about the decision that you make. Congratulations one more time I'm going to now turn it over to all of you and see what's on your mind, what questions you have and Alex is going to help me.
Alright, let's go. Let's go to it.
Christine Nguyen
06:31:40 PM
What kind of academic programs do you offer?
OK, so we have a question about the quarter system. What are the pros and cons of 1/4 system versus the semester system? OK, that's a good.
Alex Svensson
06:31:54 PM
Christine, can you be a little more specific with your question?
Can I get that from time to time? Uhm, so I'm going to say the pro of 1/4 system is that it goes really fast.
And that means that I think you get the opportunity to sit in a class for not more than say 10 weeks and before you know it it's over. So if you're not like in love with the class that you're taking, it'll be over before you know it, and you're going to beyond in the next class. The Kanava quarter system is exactly the same thing. It goes really fast. What does that mean? It means that because it goes fast, you don't have a chance to tune out. You need to be on your game the entire quarter.

Any adjustment tips for moving away from home?
Attend every class if at all possible, because when it's that short of a span of time, there's a lot of material that gets gets covered from class to class. Don't be that student that doesn't go to class. Go to class, so that's kind of my synopsis of the pros and cons of the quarter system.
Javiera Quezada
06:32:56 PM
can we access this webinar after this?
Other questions, uh, there's a question. Any adjustment tips for moving away from home? All my gosh, um, here's my first tip. If you are moving away from home, away from your family and your naughty and you're not within driving distance. For example, tip number one communication.
Alex Svensson
06:33:30 PM
Javiera, email ask an advisor and we'll send you a link to access the webinar

06:33:41 PM
Hello
Call home often. Find out whatever modes of communication are going to work for you, whether that's FaceTime or Skype or WhatsApp or email or phone call. Just communicate. Your parents are thinking about you. Your siblings are thinking about you. Don't let them wonder. Don't don't let them get to the point where they're starting to worry about you. Just be proactive and reach out to them before they have to reach out to you. It'll feel better that you're still connected to something familiar.
Bell feel better that they know that you're doing well.

Hi
Berkley Young
06:34:08 PM
Do any of the greek sororities have houses?
Sometimes students will get really wrapped up in just the excitement of the gnu college environment, their new friends, and they get carried away and they forget. Oh wow, I've got a family back home and they're thinking about me and worrying about me. So communicate and then, uh, here's my next piece of advice. This is, we talked about this and a lot of other places in a lot of other webinars. But as soon as you decide to say yes to UC Davis, if that's what you want and you, Sir, you submit that intent to register.
Alex Svensson
06:34:38 PM
Berkley, some of our Greek life do have housing and they're right across the street from campus!
Alex Svensson
06:34:50 PM
check out the following link for more info: https://osfl.ucdavis.edu/about
Soon as you do that, you're going to have an opportunity to fill out the housing application, and that's where you tell us your preferences for where you want to live on campus. We've got three beautiful housing complexes on campus with a lot of resources in each one, and you get to tell us how many roommates you want and what kind of configuration would you like. Would you like to be in a share with two roommates? Would you like to be in a suite style complex? Do you need a pool access so all those kind of things are going to be important, and that will make you feel more.
Comfortable with your move in your adjustment. Another tip for moving away from home. Find your circle. Find your friends. So look around campus there's going to be a lot of opportunities during orientation. At the end of September.
Berkley Young
06:35:13 PM
Thank you!
Where you will have ice breaker activities with students from all of all over California all over the United States and all over the world. And hopefully you'll have an opportunity to find people who share some of your same interests. You can start doing that now. We have Facebook groups. We have. Our social media is a place where you can connect with other people. Just find your community of other students who share some of your same interests. Maybe have some things in common with you in terms of their background.
So that you can click and the more people that you have around you, the more welcomed and comfortable that you would feel.

All my potential schools are UCs and they almost cost about the same. I also have similar financial aid packages. What factors should i consider?
Areli Fernandez Orozco
06:35:56 PM
Do the unitrans have a bike rack ?
Alex Svensson
06:36:08 PM
Ariel, there are bike racks on the unitrans!
And eat good food is my last. Him for adjusting away from home food makes you feel that sense of comfort. That sense of care. UC Davis has some of the best food in the country because we are really important in the world for agriculture is that we take food and nutrition very seriously.
Maggie Bourda
06:36:30 PM
Is there a counselor/adviser that I can talk to to help me decide which major is right for me?
A question about. Let's see all my potential schools are you sees an they cost about the same. I also have similar financial aid packages. What factors should I consider? Oh, I love this question so I know that if a lot of students, if you've applied to UC Davis, it's very likely that you apply to some other UC campuses as well. And if you were admitted to some of our sister campuses in the UC system, congratulations on that. The UC system is like a family.
So we're like sisters in a family, each one of us is a little bit different. We each have our own distinct personality. We may be famous for different things, but I don't think you can go wrong at any UC campus. The thing that you need to pay attention to again is fit. And when we talk about fit, it's about you, Anne, about how much that campus can address your needs as a person as a human as a social being as an academic. All of those factors that we talked about in the.
Presentation I think the biggest key difference between the UC campuses is going to be location so.
The UC system, uh, every campus within it has to meet the same quality standards for instruction for academics. For course, offerings are professors have to have the same kind of qualification. So academically we are all on par.
Alex Svensson
06:37:41 PM
Maggie, once you start at UC Davis you'll work with your college advisor to figure out which major is best for you. I believer there's a special class for undecided students to work with their advisors so they can declare after a year or two
Sydney West
06:38:04 PM
Can you double minor?
But location wise were very different, so if you're talking about UCLA that's in Los Angeles, CA, that's a huge city. Davis is not a huge city. Davis is a college town like we were talking about. Remember that you're not just choosing a school, you're essentially choosing a new home for yourself for the next four years of your life. You have to live there. So whatever. The fact that things are in that geographic location.
You're going to inherit the good and the not so good, um. So as a college town, Davis doesn't have to deal with big city issues. What are some big city issues? There's things like traffic pollution, crime, transportation issues, high cost of living. All of those things were pretty blessed in Davis to not have to have too much of those pressures, and I think that's one of the most unique parts about.
You see, Davis, that's a different from our sister campuses. Within the UC system and one of the reasons why I think students come here and they just fall in love and they just feel at home right away.
Olivia Ngo
06:39:03 PM
If we go to college to pursue one major, does that mean our life is set on that track? How do we deal with all our varying interests?
A question if we go to college to pursue one major, does that mean our life is set on that track? How do we deal with all our other varying interests? Really smart questions you guys. Thanks for asking this one. So like I mentioned, you can really choose your own adventure just because you selected a major for yourself doesn't mean that we won't give you the chance to explore just the way the system of Education works in this country is that we have this thing called General Education, which means that you're going to take.
Alex Svensson
06:39:55 PM
Sydney, I believe you can! It's really a matter of filing paperwork and talking with your advisor. Most majors really encourage students to be interdisciplinary so I would say start that conversation with your advisor when you're ready
Classes from a lot of different subject areas you're going to have that chance to taste things from completely different departments than what you are familiar with, and what are what you're used to. And that's the thing that let's students discover their their passions. I remember when I was in college, I started out as a business major.
Sydney West
06:40:10 PM
are they gonna push the date back to give us more time to decide?
Uhm, I got to my first calculus class calculus changed my major pretty quickly because it wasn't for me, but because of General Education. That requirement that GE requirement that all of you will have. I had to take a government class of political science class and you know going into it, I was like this is a required class. I have to take it. I'm just going to take it. I sat in that class an within the second day within two days of being in that class. I fell in love and it determined the.
Alex Svensson
06:40:51 PM
Sydney, We haven't announced that we will push back the SIR deadline. If we do change then we will send you and email and post in your MyAdmissions so be sure to check there
Direction that I was going to go completely changed my track and that's fine and this is another reason why we give you the chance to double major if you want or major in minor. Or you could major in something and be totally devoted on not academically. But then you want to join some clubs or some organizations or Greek life that allows you to spice it up a little bit. So there's just a lot of diversity. An really no opportunity to get bored.

06:40:56 PM
What would you describe the Davis academic culture to be? I know it is a great college, but is it competitive like other top institutions are?
Let's see what's going on.
Martin Yossifov
06:41:35 PM
Are study abroad programs major dependent? Also, how easy is it to change majors?
Um, what would you describe? the Davis academic culture to be? I know it's a great college. Thank you, um, but is it competitive? Like other top institutions are, so I didn't say this. But you see, Davis is in the top five public universities in the United States. So when you're in the top five, it means you are pretty intense, an high achieving academically. We, if you're interested in rankings, I don't like to talk about rankings too much, but if you're interested in them and you want to see how.
Um, how awesome we are in so many different departments across campus you can go to the UC Davis website, search in the search.
So far for rankings and you will see pages and pages of all of our academic rankings. To see how we compare to other institutions in the United States and across the world.
Alex Svensson
06:42:05 PM
Martin, You can study abroad based on courses that count towards your major, minor, general education or just something that you're interested in
It is a competitive school, so we're highly selected. Were admitting students who are at the tops of their classes academically in their high schools. But when you come to Davis, once you're there, you were all Aggies an you will not feel that, uh, a competitive cutthroat environment around you. The students at UC Davis are.
There really brainy there a little bit nerdy. There is Super Smart and creative, but they're not competitive against each other. Does that make sense? So our students typically compete against themselves. So you are your own competition. You were pushing yourself to achieve an Excel, but you're not feeling that sense of envy or competitiveness against your classmates. The environment is very collaborative, and that's another thing that I think.
Alex Svensson
06:42:59 PM
In terms of changing majors you have to wait one quarter and then you talk with your advisor. You'll need to get approval from the major you're applying into and sometimes that means completing prerequeste courses with GPA requirements first.
Alex Svensson
06:43:14 PM
Some majors are harder to get into than others but you'll need to check with your advisor
Um sets the UC Davis campus, apart from maybe some of our sister campuses or other institutions in the country. We are known for that collaborative campus community where students are just working together. They work on projects and papers and experiments and researchers together they want each other to succeed because they're not worried.
That they won't have access to all those awesome opportunities that I talked about for internships and for research and for jobs you will all have it, so there's not that fear of I'm going to miss out if I share with another classmate or if I collaborate with another classmate. It is very collaborative. That's sort of. That's our culture.
Sohyun Park
06:43:43 PM
When can you choose to double major? Or choose a minor?
Alex is really busy. I think in the chat. Thank you Alex for helping me.
Areli Fernandez Orozco
06:44:11 PM
One of the reasons why my parents are hesitant about me going into the UC systems is the constant competition for everything, internships, research, class registration. Can you talk about the registration process, and general grading policies ?
Um, when can you choose to double major or choose a minor? Uh, so you're going to enter UC Davis? You're going to arrive at orientation, already have having a major? You will because you indicated a major on your UC applications. And if you have already made up your mind that you don't like that anymore and you want to change your mind and you want to choose it completely different major or you want to double major when you get to orientation, you will sit down with advisors from the department's from the majors.
And you can just tell them right there. I have my eyes on this other major and I want to marry it with the one that I'm coming in with. I wanna do a double major or I'm thinking about maybe a minor. I'm thinking about changing my major and those major advisors are really experts at that and they will help you sign up for the right classes so that you're taking the ones that will enable you to fulfill a degree in those areas if that's what you choose.
Christine Nguyen
06:45:04 PM
And are there any internship programs
Alex Svensson
06:45:24 PM
Areli, most students I've talked to have described UC Davis as a super collaborative environment. Students are very open to helping each other out.
I also recommend that if you're still kind of exploring majors and we have over 100 majors, so I don't blame you for. I mean, any student for for considering other options, or maybe being a little bit confused. There's a lot of options, so if you go to the UC Davis website, you click on the tab for major is you're going to see all of our majors listed. You're going to see the classes that you would take within that major. You'll see different careers that it will lead you to.
We also have a site called the UC Davis Majors Blague, and that's where you can see where some of our alumni, uh, what they have done with.
Whatever respective major anet where have they have they gone in their careers, and how successful they are at this point?
Alex Svensson
06:45:48 PM
In terms of registering for classes, most of our students are able to get into their needed classes within 1-2 quarters
Alex Svensson
06:46:10 PM
And then the grading policies across UC's are pretty similar.
A question about are there any internships, programs? Yes, so we're really big on internships. The internship and Career Center on our campus is your one stop shop for finding internships. You can definitely do it on your own, but these people are awesome for matching students based on their fields of studies. With the long list of internships that we have, we have over 10,000 internships that are facilitated.
Alex Svensson
06:46:28 PM
Most classes are letter grades with some giving the option for p/np
Every year by the internship and Career Center, so there's a lot to go around. You just need to get out there and um, and let them know that you want to do that.
Olivia Ngo
06:46:35 PM
Are there performing arts opportunities on campus?
A lot of our students will will do more than one internship before they even graduate.
Question about performing arts opportunities. So, um, UC Davis, even though we're probably most famous for some of the STEM fields, we are really big on Performing Arts. We have the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, which is a world class Performing Arts Center that people will come from other cities to attend performances. Their musical performances, dance drama performances.
There's a lot of Fine Arts on our campus. We have three museums, including a brand new world class Art Museum with rotating exhibits.
On the topic of Performing Arts, I'm just going to share my own favorite performing art piece on you on the UC Davis campus. I don't know if you all know what acapella is or if you're into acapella, but I am and we have two really outstanding acapella groups on campus that are women's a cappella group called the spokes based on bicycles. 'cause we're big on bikes, an arm NS A cappella group called the Afterglow please like search them on in style. You can see there some of their performances.

What are the dining options like if you have special dietary needs? Like gluten free or vegan
Every year in the spring, uhm, they usually like to have a big sing of- that competes against other universities like University of Oregon and Stanford University and UC Berkeley, and they'll come, they'll all come congregate at UC Davis and they'll do a huge thing. Of- party. And they're all mind-blowing. Anyway. Check out RA cappella scene.
Um question about dining? What are the dining options like? If you have special dietary needs, like gluten free or vegan? Thanks for asking that question. We have all dining options, so there's a lot of specific dietary restrictions that people across the world have an we catered. Everyone of them like there. We let's see how can I put this one thing that UC Davis is really great at one of the many things is that we are it's very important to us that.
Yasmine Valjalo
06:49:07 PM
Are there Intercollegiate sports? (Say cross country)
Um students feel included and welcomed and that they feel like they have Open Access to all the opportunities equally and that that touches food as well. So we have options for vegetarian vegan, hello, kosher uhm?
Gluten free, dairy free. Basically, once you come to campus, let's say that you are living at the residence halls and you've got a meal plan with the dining Commons. You will just tell them from the on set. These are my dietary restrictions and they will have that in mind as they're preparing the menu for that for, uh, for that week in the dining Commons, an there are rotating menus, so you will always find a variety In addition to the amazing food that's in the dining Commons. We also have food trucks and.
Pranav Krishnan
06:49:41 PM
Do you have Asian/Indian food also?
Even the food trucks are very sensitive to the fact that people have different dietary needs and will provide options for you. You will not go hungry. That's one thing I know for sure.
Sydney West
06:50:09 PM
is the food good be honest
Alex Svensson
06:50:15 PM
The Food is delicious
Um question, same thing about food. Do you have Asian Indian food also? Um, yes yes yes. Just way too many that Tillis there. It's a. We've got a lot of different ethnic food options on campus off-campus. You will find your favorite food. I have yet to.
Alex Svensson
06:50:30 PM
I work on campus and visit the dining commons often
Alex Svensson
06:50:35 PM
Latitude is my favorite
I'm trying to think if there's 'cause I'm a foodie, and I know Alex is a foodie also, so we know that we never struggle to find the kinds of foods that we've got. A lot of Thai food. We have Indian food, Middle Eastern food, vegan food, healthy food. Sushi is big and Davis, there's a lot. You'll find your niche, I promise.
Mallika Hari
06:51:04 PM
Are their Co-op Programs at Davis?
Are there intercollegiate sports like cross country? Yes. So the sports scene at UC Davis is intense. I don't know if you all know this. Hopefully you do. If you don't, I'm telling you now you see Davis is is a Division One school and so that's that's the best that you can be in the United States. It means that our teams are on TV for over 20 sports. We are Division One and then so I would encourage you to visit our athletics website if you want to see what all of those are.
And then, In addition to our Division One teams, we have intermural sports that where we have students who may have been athletes in high school. But they come to college. They don't want to give up their sport. They still want to feel like they're engaged in it and compete, competing against other students. So they have teams that will emerge from the campus community and they will play. They will continue to play and they take it very seriously. And we also have club sports where they can compete against other.
Campuses besides UC Davis. Outside of the UC Davis community so.
Regardless of what level you are at athletically, you will find a sports team for you.
Pranav Krishnan
06:51:54 PM
Is it mandatory to ride cycles or can we manage with Buses within the campus?
Alex Svensson
06:52:11 PM
Pranav, you can totally manage with walking and using the bus sistem
Alex Svensson
06:52:14 PM

Um, are there Co-op programs a Davis, so we have work study if you're looking for something that would enable you to work off some of your expenses, that's something that you will also find, probably on our financial aid page. There's some information on the work study program.

06:52:30 PM
do people really get the chance to know their professors? How many classes are larger than 30 students?
We also have a lot of great campus jobs, so we even have students who work for us in the admissions office. There's a lot of different types of jobs that appeal to different skill sets and that you can actually use to build your resumes and make you really look really good for Graduate School later on for law school or Med school, there's a listing also through our internship and Career Center called handshake, where you can see all the different job opportunities that our students have access to.
Sydney West
06:52:56 PM
is there an honors program?
Um, a question here. Do people really get the chance to know their professors? How many classes are larger than 30 students? OK, so I don't have like actual data on this, but I will tell you that our average student to faculty to student to teacher ratio is about 1819 to one.
Alex Svensson
06:53:17 PM
Sydney, we do have an honors program. You can learn more about it here: https://honors.ucdavis.edu/
Michele Momita
06:53:25 PM
When you choose a minor can it be in the same department as your major or does it have to be in a different one?
Alex Svensson
06:53:37 PM
Michele, doesn't have to be the same!
And when I say that it means that though that's not necessarily what it will look like in your class, but it's campuswide. So like I mentioned, the many of your classes that you're going to take in your first year or two with in general education are going to be the same classes everybody else has to take. So those tend to be a lot larger the older that you get, the further along you get in your studies. So say in your three and four as you're getting closer to getting your degree.
Olivia Ngo
06:53:54 PM
Do you have advice for students who feel hindered choosing the university that is a top choice by financial factors?
Areli Fernandez Orozco
06:54:05 PM
Can you use the meal plan at Lattitude
Your classes will shrink a lot and there are students who get to like their 4th year and their class sizes are like 1020 students. There very intimate. That said, our professors are your teachers and their number one priority is being your teacher 1st, and so they have office hours and they are super accessible. Their biggest complaint that we hear about from the professors as they'll say, students don't come see us as often as we would like to see them.
Alex Svensson
06:54:28 PM
Areli, you can! It's one of our newest dining commons so meal plans and aggie cash work
So they're sitting around in their offices waiting to interact with you, waiting to hear what's on your mind. If there's any questions that you have after a class and students don't come so they're there, they're ready to talk to you. They're ready to interact.
Super accessible, but again in college it's you that has to go to them. They're not going to come chasing after you.
Question here, do you have advice for students who feel hindered choosing the University? That's the top choice by financial factors.
Samuel Kahn
06:55:07 PM
Are there any limits on how many times you can make an appointment with writing and mental health services?
So I'm I'm going to interpret that this means, like you have some options in front of you and there is some schools and they may be more affordable than some other ones. And that's the enticing factor to you. So you're really pulled in that direction because it's the money factor. Well, that's part of fit, and it's a big factor when we talk about fit. We discussed that already.
I strongly believe that students can achieve a bachelors degree. A four year undergraduate degree in a lot. A lot of different price points like a really strong academic experience and a strong bachelors degree. I am not from the school of thought that says you should disrupt your whole family budget for a for an undergraduate degree. We'd love to see our students like it. Think of think beyond their bachelors. Like maybe I want to sort of pace myself financially so that I have some money leftover.
Alex Svensson
06:55:55 PM
Samuel, I don't believe we have any limits! We also have "CAN" counselors in all of the community centers so if you need some extra supports you can reach out to them in addition to the counselors at the student health center
Samuel Kahn
06:56:05 PM
Is there a limit on the amount of appointments you can make with writing and mental health services?
To do a Masters degree or a PhD or go on to law school if I want to come. This is when you really have to be true to yourself. I mean I, I want to give you that sense of comfort and confidence when we talk about choosing a school for yourself. It has to be a very personal, individual decision. This is not the decision that you want to make because of any kind of peer pressure from your friends. Like Oh my buddies are all going to that school. So I should go there or.
Alexis Shohet
06:56:42 PM
How do you join a club? Do you sign up or just go to a meeting?
That's cool, has like my favorite football team or so I should go there. It needs to be a lot more holistic and super personal. So if the financial is a big factor, and here's how you know it's a big factor. It's when you sit down with your family members and you're talking about what you can afford and you're looking at the tuition of UC Davis or any other school. If it starts to become a stressful conversation, it probably is a good sign for you that that school is not the best one.
For you, because again, we want your focus primarily to be on just enjoying college annex selling in your class is not on things like am I going to be able to pay the tuition this quarter, or am I going to pay for books this quarter? Or if I like, how much food can I eat and let me do this budget and this math?
Sydney West
06:57:13 PM
sorry the website is confusing- can you join the honors program when you get to davis?
Definitely those are factors that everyone has to take into account, but the bigger the financial factor is for you probably means that you need to put that higher up on your priority list for making a choice, and it's absolutely fine, and we want to make sure that you feel empowered to do that.
Alex Svensson
06:57:45 PM
Sydney, Honors program admits were notified when we sent out admissions offers. If you didn't get in you can apply next quarter
Maggie Bourda
06:58:00 PM
How many classes do students usually take at one time?
We're going to just take a couple more questions, 'cause I'm wrapping up. I'm reaching the end of my time now. Remember what I said? You can always go to the admissions website an ask an advisor were all there. There's a lot of other people on my team that are willing to answer your questions and ready to answer your questions. So don't feel bad if we don't get to all of your questions here. Um, here's a question about clubs. How do you join a club? Do you sign up or just go to a meeting? OK, so usually the beginning of every year.
Club recruitment process on the quiet in the center of campus and you will see all of our clubs represented out on tables looking for new members. You can just walk up to the table and say Hey I'm interested in this like.
Alex Svensson
06:58:27 PM
Maggie, students usually take about 15qtr units so maybe 3-5 classes
Zombie apocalypse club. Can I join or this badminton club or whatever it is and and they would love to receive you? People in Davis are really friendly so no one's ever going to make you feel weird or or turn you away. So that's an easy way to join a club.
You can hit them up on Facebook, you can hit them up on Instagram. Uhm, there's other ways to reach out to them. Many of them have websites. Uh, another way to join a club is to make your own club. So let's pretend that out of our 800 club offerings, you can't find the one that excites you. You can start your own, and it's a pretty quick, easy process for that as well.
Pranav Krishnan
06:59:03 PM
can we talk to an Advisor now or only after we accept the admission?
All right, any last final questions.
OK question about the advising process. Can we talk to an advisor now or only after we accept the admission so you can talk to an advisor right now you can go to the ask an advisor feature on the admissions website and type in a question. Anna real life professional full-time staff advisor from the admissions office will respond to your question to make sure that you have the information that you need.
Um, and if you have a specific question about your major, so a lot of times students will ask us things like tell me about your physics major or your computer science major. And honestly, there's no way that I can have all the deeds on like every single one of our 104 majors. So the best advice for you there, if it's a very specific major question about a specific field of study or opportunities within that major or classes you have to take, you need to go directly to the major advisors and you can find them from the UC Davis website.
Alex Svensson
07:00:32 PM
