So we have lots of folks already welcome. Welcome everyone.
Alrighty, welcome congratulations. Admitted students I know we're going to have a lot more people joining us over the next couple minutes. I just wanted to start off by first introducing myself. Hello, my name is Devin. I am an admissions advisor with undergrad admissions at UC Davis. I've got a couple screens so I may not always be looking right at you, but I'm going to learn from class of 2015. My Major was in communication and I got a minor in managerial economics and I'm originally from San Diego.
Cool and my name is Lithia. I am also class of 2015 and also an admissions advisor but I am a psychology major with a human development minor an my hometown is Antioch, CA also known as the East Bay.
Wonderful, so before we get started, uh, we're really excited. We have some fun stuff for you guys before we get started. Will let you know a couple of things. So the chat is moderated, meaning not all of the things that you enter in there will necessarily show up, or they may be a little bit delayed. We do have a lot we want to go over and we're trying to keep things involvement as possible. We will hopefully have time to do 15 or so, maybe 20 minutes of questions at the end and we can open it up then.
Otherwise, we're mainly going to be leaving the chat open for, um, we're going to play in cahoots, so we're going to leave it open for that, but.
Uh, one other things that you should know as well if you want to use close captioning that is available so that button is at the top right corner, and if you click that it will show up in the chat as well for you. So that is an automated feature, so it may not be perfect, but it is available if you want to use it. Let me see I forget anything.
No, I think you're all good.
OK, great, so let's go ahead and get started. I'm Davis in real life. What is it actually like at UC Davis? What is it like to be student? What's our campus like? We're hoping to be able to provide some insight to you. Virtually obviously you guys camp. Is it going to do our best to provide?
I'm kind of a little more info for you so let's go ahead and we're going to go ahead and join so for those of you who are not familiar. You can go to www.co dot it or if you have a cool app. You can use that go ahead and use this game. Pin here and then you will be able to join for those of you who have any issues. I'll give you a few of it to kind of join our group. But for those of you who can't or don't want to you can also input your answers to the questions in the chat.
Uhm, and will be moderating that and hopefully get through that as well.
So one thing I pull up right before as we're waiting for everybody to join the ku game. So this session is recorded. So if you want to go back and listen to our answers to the questions that you're in putting as we progress through the session, then you will actually go back to where you registered for this event to find the recording of this session.
I'm gonna give it like 30 more seconds. I don't want to waste our time uhm?
Really excited, see on scouts.

Like I said, if it's not working for you, you can always participate by putting your answers in chat. I don't have a prize, so if you get all of them right, there isn't a prize so you won't miss out if you are unable to join.
Prices knowing you know a lot about the glass I suppose.
OK, let's do it. Let's start. OK, um, first question.
OK, I turn the sound off. Sorry guys. On an average day how many bikes would you guess are on campus?
Alex Svensson
06:05:12 PM
https://www.ucdavis.edu/about/sustainability/
https://www.ucdavis.edu/campus-life/explore-campus/transportation/
And there's only 10 seconds 'cause we're just going to kind of either, you know it or you don't. And then we're going to go from there, and we'll be talking about all the answers at the end. There are an average of 22,000 bikes on campus. Umso Davis is. We pride ourselves on sustainability, where the first most sustainable campus on the US and #3 and world. So we pride ourselves on how green we are and how economically friendly we are. So bikes are a big part of our campus in our community, with an average of 22,000 on campus everyday.
I have I have all these pictures. I didn't even go to yet here so there's tons of bikes all over campus. Uhm, we have these bike circles that make it a little bit safer for bikes to go to and from on the streets so all the streets are only for bikes or emergency vehicles. So yeah, so incoming first year students, incoming students. I would encourage you to bring a bike your first year if it's not driving for you. We have a bus system as well so that also promotes kind of eco friendly attitude but.
Definitely big on the bikes.
You say you're ready for the 2nd question.
My mouse got stuck there it is.
Alrighty, snowy elephant, you answered correct and the fastest well done. I love all these nicknames. OK question too.
So the second question is, you see Davis has a building on campus with the following nickname.
Alrighty, so this is kind of a tricky one, but go ahead, sorry, let's you.

Alex Svensson

https://sllc.ucdavis.edu/domes
No, no. I mean that's fine, um, so yeah, this is kind of a trick question. We actually have two uhm, interesting buildings on campus. The first is the death star, also known as our social Sciences and Humanities. Building off the corner of our campus northeast northwest really get my directions on confused, but this building houses.
Our College of letters and Science Deans Office and it hosts a lot of the Department in major advisors for that college, so everything from our arts and Humanities Social Sciences will be housed in here economics as well. If you have opportunity to go into this building, make sure that you would take advantage of it by playing. Capture the flag or even playing humans versus Zombies, which is a big game on campus for students who like to take advantage of the architecture.
Katelyn Nielsen
06:08:01 PM
whats happening
Or user as an opportunity to say hi to other students while you're trying to find your class in this building are second of fun building on campus are known as the domes, so are domes are very unique in that they're sustainable. Living and learning communities on campus, and they basically look like concrete igloos and they house about 20 six students as well. But you can find that closer to the East side of campus, so it's pretty cool.
Alex Svensson
06:08:16 PM
Katelyn, if you're having difficulties seeing or hearing try to refresh and come back in

Let's go back to next question.
Oak wing it Bunny coming on coming in hot. Alrighty so which of the following cool classes is not offered at UC Davis? So one of these classes we do not offer.
Alex Svensson
06:08:47 PM
https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/ultimate-aggie-classes/
Alrighty, lots of you got tree climbing. That is a real class at its available like Amber. What school I found it but it's not a Davis. We do have archery which is pretty cool but we do have the following others so all of them are pretty popular on campus so tractor driving. I personally took that and I thought it was a blast. Another popular one is our design of coffee class which includes a lab, lots of tasting and roasting involved and then Lastly well. I was hoping to have in the picture but human sexuality. Another one that looked easy and I broke took actually together.
Um was a really fun as well, so lots of different options and there's a way more classes in that too. So lots of fun. Class is one of the great things about having so many different majors on campus. You can kind of explore lots of different areas.
One thing I will throw in there real quick is that although we don't have a tree climbing class, we do have rock climbing available for students who want to learn how to do.
So our next question is which of the following athletic facilities does UC Davis have?
Alex Svensson
06:10:03 PM
https://www.ucdavis.edu/campus-life/athletics-sports/
Alex Svensson
06:10:05 PM
https://campusrecreation.ucdavis.edu/arc
UC Davis actually has a lot of athletic facilities. All of the ones included and many many more. So let me see if I can pull up some cool pictures for you.
And we do have 2125 Division One sports teams and 39 club sports as well as 29 Inter murals or iems? Some of my favorite ones are intermural. Sorry Inter tube water polo, and quit EDG, so those are pretty fun for students to go ahead and compete with one another in the very school spirit friendly way. And In addition to that, if you don't want to go on like an organized team with your colleagues, you can definitely take advantage of, like car wrecks are rec pool.
Um, our activities and Recreation Center, also known as the Ark, and that's where you'll actually find the rock climbing room as well as it will have an indoor track cardio machines or cardio and weight machines, and basically everything that you need to just stay healthy or even get to know if you want to pursue that goal.
So elephant come back happy. Mind out the top.
Already guys, what is an egghead?
According to a Davis person.
There is actually definition in the dictionary, but that's what we're looking for.
Alex Svensson
06:11:30 PM
https://www.ucdavis.edu/campus-life/arts-culture/eggheads/
Alrighty, Yes, and our installment on campus. Well done, well done. Uhm, there are actually a total of Seven eggheads on campus in five different locations, so we've got ion mrak. We've got book head, which actually this one is a different material. Like the paint is different because so many folks touch it because right outside the library we've got.
Oh no, honestly, I have no idea.
I am completely having whatever this is. 1/2 of that here. No evil. See no evil, so these are just some of I didn't get to show all of them for you, but there are cool because there you can. A lot of people take pictures with them. Lots of people touch them, so they're not like it's not like a museum where you can't touch. There are really cool symbol of our campus and they all have really unique meanings behind them. To you can learn a lot more about them. I didn't even mention this before, but our lovely colleague Alex has been putting in all kinds of helpful links for you.
The eggheads has a link up For more information about that. If you're interested and all the things we've already talked about, there's links to those two so you can kind of explore more on your own. All the different things it offers Davis has is so expensive that we can't possibly talk about everything, but we can kind of introduce you to all the different things that it offers, and you can kind of explore the things you're interested in your own. So let's go ahead and.
Move to our next question.
So where is the Dave? Are farmers market health?
Alex Svensson
06:13:18 PM
https://www.davisfarmersmarket.org/
Beautiful so I don't know how many of you have been to Davis but yes, downtown Davis is where one of them is. We also have them on the quad.
And so I can find unless he still tell you more while I try and find my slideshow.
Yes, so um, we do host farmers market on campus in the Memorial Union by the quad up and in the in Central Park a couple blocks away from campus. They usually held like twice a week throughout the fall and spring. I believe maybe one time in the winter, but you can find a lot of local vendors selling everything from organic produce to some of my favourites like the ice Crean words like they have the lavender ice cream and avocado ice cream.
But if you go to the one in Central Park, you'll find that there are a lot of local bands that played there as well, so it's a nice way to take advantage of just being outside and enjoying. Kind of that Davis vibe without having to do anything too fancy or planning for anything too fancy. You can grab a quick bite to eat there as well so you don't even have to worry about packing and an actual picnic. And if you're on campus, it's a good way to just grab a quick snack. A healthy snack in between classes, or get what you need before heading home.
The dorms, or even to the apartments in your second, 3rd and 4th year.
Already, which of the following are not available through our equestrian center?
I don't think I can read them on 10 seconds, otherwise I would try.
Alex Svensson
06:15:07 PM
https://campusrecreation.ucdavis.edu/recreation/equestrian-center
Alrighty, so equine anatomy courses. So who gets horse boarding? We do have horse boarding. That's one of the biggest parts of our question. Center, which is cool. We also offer lessons and it's a great student Employment Opportunity. Students also you can see the our question team utilizes the space for competitions. We do have an equestrian team, but it's a Division One NCAA sport. It's, I believe it's knew last year we just added it along with beach volleyball. But yeah, also for sporting and you can get horseback riding lessons. There's no open writing.
So you can't just go and get on horse riding around, but you can take a class to learn more about it, which is a lot of fun, so we're only you see within equestrian center.
Oh man, if you wanted to take.
Equine anatomy courses. I'm confident you could find something if not multiple options through our animal Science Department, so they're just not offered at the centre already happier, I know. You're on Fireman, Alrighty.
Sorry, next question is when is the Arboretum open?
Alex Svensson
06:16:24 PM
https://arboretum.ucdavis.edu/
24/7 well done. I see a lot of people didn't answer that question.
That's OK, it looks like majority of you got it right.
Let's see if I can put up.
Freedom is about a three mile walk way around Puta Creek. Uhm, and has a bunch of different gardens exhibiting plans from all over the world, including a Redwood Grove, which is one of my favorite places walkthrough for a break. But you'll find a lot of students doing everything from studying on hammocks or taking naps in between classes. And sometimes you'll see people just just taking a quick break in between. There you find lots of squirrels.
How long the Arboretum as well as ducks the ducklings in spring are some of the best things to look at during the spring. Yeah, I know. Favorite part about it, but you can also find like a gazebo. We do have like annual plant cells that you can go check out and potentially buy plants for to take care of.
OK, the Memorial Union is home too.
Rock climbing Wall. Coffee House Bowling Alley Accd.
You may have had a hint earlier to this answer.
Alex Svensson
06:17:51 PM
https://memorialunion.ucdavis.edu/
https://studentaffairs.ucdavis.edu/resources/scc
OK, so all except for the rock climbing wall our house now memorial union. There's a lot of different things who?
Up groove seal coming hot oh gosh.
Understand this happened to answer this question too.
You gotta look inside of there.
I know I was clicking on things OK.
Alex Svensson
06:18:19 PM
https://theaggie.org/2017/10/31/history-of-gunrock-answers-questions-about-mascot/
OK well done. Uhm Gunrock is the name of our mascot. Uhm, let me go ahead and not click ahead.
There we go, so going back for Memorial Union, we have our coffee house there, Steven run overseen by ASU CD, also housing the moron union. We also have our games area which has a bowling alley billiards. We've got a PC gaming area, lots of lounges, there's a market, lots of different things like our office for sorority and fraternity, life center, first involvement, our picnic day office or all the people that are putting together picnic day which is a pretty big deal. Those are all house there so lots of lots of things in the Memorial Union.
We do have a rock climbing wall. It is not there. It is actually in the activities and Rec Center, but we do have one and then gun rock.
Oh, is there some Community Center if you want to know, and, uh, gunrock, um is actually was a real horse, but we are called the Aggies as a group, but Kan Rock is a Mustang and.
That's pretty much it, but the history, uhm?
Skype. OK, well done folks. I got you at Aggie, don't I OK?
Uh, my musty is the slow mascot, so.
Here, wondering OK? Go ahead with the CIA.
Alrighty is so our next question. Is it snows in Davis? Yes or no? True or false?
Alex Svensson
06:20:11 PM
https://www.cityofdavis.org/about-davis/weather
https://memorialunion.ucdavis.edu/outdoor-adventures
Falls it does not sound Davis.
Right, so we got about 20 inches of rain throughout the year. Um, so we do get some seasons up here in Northern California, but we are pretty close to Lake Tahoe where there are mountain regions and you'll actually find snow there during the winter months. And the very popular club on campus is known as our outdoor adventures club or and they.
Um, have like programs where they usually visit like Lake Tahoe and even Yosemite and do things like whitewater rafting and hiking together as a group. And we also have our ski and snowboard club where students can take like cabin trips and ski weeks to enjoy more of the snow. So the nice thing about our campuses that were centrally located in the state so you have access to all those really cool parts that are just beautiful throughout the year no matter what season and there are a lot of willing students who want to take advantage.
Of the habitat and take road trips together for that.
Already last question, we're going to open it up to any questions you have or we can elaborate on anything we talked about, but.
Which spot do you think is the best according to our nap map?
I'll give you a hint there all right answers.
Alex Svensson
06:21:53 PM
https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?msa=0&dg=feature&mid=1P2e04qVbgII4bDQPpFawDc7hhjQ&ll=38.547537867419805%2C-121.7554505&z=13
Yes, so I would probably pick the hammocks as well. Um, there are probably my favorite, but there's lots of options. I think window seats are also great. There's lots of lounges if you looking for something a little bit like you want. Some of that white noise in the background. There's a really cool courtyard that's a little bit like farther South on campus. There are not a lot of people there, but you can check out the map map map map.
Google map with little cows taking naps all around. You can see all the different places and different like reviews of people that have not there and like or don't like the space so we're definitely support student health, mental, physical to make sure students are getting appropriate amount of rest and there's lots of specific places where works like yes take a nap recharge. We know that's part of being a student. An really supportive of that. So just a fun little.
So you made this question, but I think you left out the best nap spot on campus.
The massage chairs there are massage chairs on camping.
You can sleep in a massage chair.
Fall asleep in 10 minutes.

How do work studies work?
Zahraa Jamshed
06:22:45 PM
If I do work-study as a freshman, can I be a part-time student?
I mean, there's a lot. There's a lot of options. Alrighty, Rocky Jaguar, third place.
Mighty Dragon 2nd place is happy right now.
The type around. Yep, happy now. Well done, well done guys. Thanks for playing for. I'm sure you guys have to do her school and things like that. We hope this a little more fun. It's probably. I mean we still did talk a lot. Hopefully it was a little bit more interactive so you guys got to kind of learn and do at the same time. So let's go ahead and open up to questions on this slide show for you so you can kind of see some really awesome shots of campus and go ahead and just ask us whatever questions you guys have.
So I think the first question is actually, uhm, about work study. So the question is, how do work studies work?
So I'll go ahead and talk about that. Work. Study is part of a financial aid offer that students can take advantage of. There a few different stipulations for work study, but usually a lot of student jobs on campus will honor work, study and essentially the way it works is that the the money that you earned through work study is automatically applied to your student fees, and so it's a good way to pay off some of that.
Those the fees throughout the time that you're there, but it is an option, and so you should definitely check out all the fine print that is there on your my admissions award to talk to see more about what work study entails and how to get that approved through University jobs. I'm not sure if you have anything else to add, Devin.
I don't I got work study my senior year. My friend like financial situation changed so I ended up getting it and I basically worked for. I've already had the job but it kind of rolled over and so basically the money comes from a different place instead of whoever is hiring you, paying out of their pocket. The money comes differently, so there's a lot more information about if you qualify and what it means on the financial aid website that be great place to check. But it's a great opportunity if you're eligible for it.
It looks like a student asked about discrimination against LGB Tikku students.
Meline Norquist
06:25:15 PM
Is it hard to get a double in housing?
Personally, I haven't seen anything. Um, I know we do a lot of we have our LGB tikku, a Resource Center located in our student Community Center. It's a great. I mean, I'm sure that's that's probably listed on our next space as well. There's lots of menat spaces in our student Community Center.
Alex Svensson
06:25:26 PM
Meline housing is first come first serve
But yeah, so we have that center and there's a lot of support and lot of outreach alley training things like that to make sure that our campus is inclusive of people, no matter how they identify.
I don't have anything else to add that if you have anything else to add, I.
Alex Svensson
06:25:43 PM
you can include your preference on the housing application but it depends on space
Atina Hamidi
06:25:49 PM
Have you seen any discrimination against LGBTQ students?
Orli Algranatti
06:26:04 PM
If students want to take horseback riding lessons are there discounts
I haven't seen anything on campus, uh, as my time in my time as a student or as an advisor either, so that would be like what 1010 nine years now. But I mean, are what I do know is that when something happens, our campus this come together to be supportive towards groups that may feel like they are discriminated. So I will say that we do come together as a community if things are rise 4.
Certain populations and we do try to be there for one another.
And I think I do want to go back to there's a question about work study as well, just 'cause we touched on that topic earlier. But if I do work study as a freshman, can they be a part time student? So the general rule of thumb is if you are a student receiving financial aid, you do have to be a full time student to receive that financial aid. So I believe it's 1240 units per quarter to receive that financial aid. But of course you want to double check with the financial aid office to see if there are other possibilities.
Alex Svensson
06:26:44 PM
Orli, students are able to take riding lessons! I think there might be a cost for the lessons but I'd encourage you to visit the equestrian center for more information
In being able to arrange your financial aid and full time status.
Isaac Ing
06:26:53 PM
Where are the most iconic spots on campus for those interested in maximizing instagram clout?
Cool, I gotta question where the most iconic spots on campus. For those interested in maximizing Instagram Cloud. IAM not an Instagram experts so I'm not the.
I mean, there's many other people I'm sure you could ask. Might be current students, but I will tell you that the eggheads are iconic Davis like staples like you know exactly from anyway, like that is a Davis icon. There's a few of them. The The Ion Mrak, which is probably one of the most common common for people. Whether it's grad pictures or people on their first corridor, taking picture on campus, I don't know if you're watching this slide show, but there's amazing, amazing, gorgeous places. But if you're looking for something iconic like something really specific, we've got a lot of our on campus. The eggheads.
The Student Community Center is up right now. There's the practice of Freedom Euro, which is gorgeous. Uhm, and there's constantly new installments of temporary are being put on campus. I know we have like a chalk board situation where people were writing. I don't remember like things that something they had. There were people were writing things on it that were based on certain prompt so constantly different things. The water towers are big ones. The cows obviously are big ones. Anything I'm missing with TCF?
Zahraa Jamshed
06:28:26 PM
If I do not accept a loan, can I accept it later in the year?
I would say in the Arboretum in the fall and spring time you will definitely see the trees changing colors and their beautiful to take pictures of. I say the there's a Japanese yellow. Uhm, I forgot what the name of the tree is, but it turns completely yellow in the fall time and a lot of students will put all the leaves together and put like a :) in it. Or just take pictures of.
Alex Svensson
06:28:43 PM
Zahraa, you'll want to check with financial aid on that question
Alex Svensson
06:28:45 PM

06:28:54 PM
you can use the contact an expect link to get a hold of them
There is a question about bowling.
Yeah, is the bowling alley and other stuff in the building free to use, uhm?
The lot of the stuff on the activities in Regner is included, so the rock climbing wall, things like that, uhm?
Kayla Lujan
06:29:17 PM
is the bowling alley and other stuff in that buildingfree to use?
But the, UM, the bowling alley and the moral union? Uhm, there is a fee for lens for game and for shoes. Uhm, it's like $6 for game, so it's pretty reasonable pricing wise. I saw a question about the horseback riding lessons you'll have to. I just Googled the costs for. I literally just went to UC Davis schemes area and looked at how much it costs for bowling. It's all pretty. Everything is pretty transparent. I see the prices are pretty competitive and there.
Geared towards students. Use light using those spaces.
And I believe there's a uh, like a fee reduction for some students for horseback riding as well, but that is all on the website.

How will move-in day proceed? What are the instructions incoming freshmen should know or do beforehand?
Morgane Gaucher
06:30:13 PM
do you know if fall quarter will be remote or on campus?
Our next question is in regards to the current pandemic and like how that will impact move in Day an. What are the instructions for incoming freshmen in regards to that?
So what I can say is that at this point in time we haven't.
We're kind of playing it by year, and so we haven't announced that fall quarter will be online, so we're hoping that everything will go back to normal and that we can resume classes in person in the fall. However, we do have a website where you can keep track of campus updates in regards to COVID-19. I believe Alex will put that in the chat, but if you check there you should see some upcoming updates and then we will most likely send that information.
Alex Svensson
06:30:55 PM
https://www.ucdavis.edu/coronavirus/news/undergraduate-admissions/

Can you talk a bit about the deferral/gap year process please?
OK, yeah, so I know there's a lot of questions and someone's asking about what the deferment processes like we're using the scene different processes we always do, so you can defer for up to for anywhere from 1/4 to a full year. You have until the first day of the quarter to submit that application.
If we typically it's for unique, so I can't really tell you exactly if who gets granted, but you will need to submit an application for that. Um, you cannot take any courses elsewhere during your deferred time, so if you are saying I'm just going to stay at home, do some Community College, and then go back, that's not really an option. You could do. Some are you could take courses over the summer technically, but you can't defer and then take courses during a regular term somewhere else, but you can defer if you would like to. The information for that is on your my admissions page, so you just go down to the bottom.
And it should have information on, um, what you need to do to submit that application to defer.
Oh, there's a fun question. An laticia alum. Give that one to you. We will talk about plants do not.
Bolu Laseinde
06:32:24 PM
I think you guys mentioned something about being able to buy plants and take care of them. Can you talk more about that?
With you wines over here, but.
Meline Norquist
06:32:51 PM
How are lab courses currently being given?
Uh, so, uh? The next question is about our plant sale that I mentioned earlier in regards to it being hosted on the Arboretum or through Arboretum Department. And if we can talk more about that. So yeah, we have annual plant sales. Where are Arboretum Department, which is our maintenance Department that will take care of the arena and make sure it looks beautiful year around. They have their own nurse so we get on campus and they will host I believe like at least 2.
Alex Svensson
06:33:06 PM
Hi Meline, labs are online at the moment
Annual uhm plant sales where you can come in and just buy whatever you would like to have and they give you instructions on how to take care of those. You'll find a lot of plants are focused on being good for B pollination because we want to make sure that we're keeping our environment healthy via bees, and on that fun though you can also visit the husband's lab on campus and see how we make ice cream.

its a different way of learning but we're hopefully that we'll be open for the fall. If we're not we'll find a way to make sure you get the learning experience you need online
It looks like we have a question as soon as how soon do you recommend applying for a job on campus? I would say it really depends.
Catalina French
06:33:40 PM
How soon do you recommend applying for a job on campus?
On Yuan, if once you start your fall quarter and you feel really confident and the classes you're taking and that you're able to manage the courseload, keep in mind a lot of students kind of it's kind of quick. 'cause on the quarter system you take a course, or you take your your set of courses in 10 weeks. So after your first week is over, you just sent 10% of the material for the course. So if you think about it that way, it can't be really fast paced, but if you're confident that you have a handle on it, you can start applying for jobs. and I would also consider the job you're applying for.
My winter quarter. My freshman year I applied and I was a writer for the newspaper. So again technically able to job it was it was not an hourly or o'clock in sort of a job. I had an assignment and I completed it on my own time when I was able to. So it was a nice little way to get a little bit of money and still get some work experience, but without having to be bogged down by 20 hours of work on campus. And then I picked up jobs that had more of a Clock in, like hourly ended up doing probably 20 hours towards my senior year.
Because I was better how to better handle on my courses. By then it was more confident with things so that it depends on the person. But you said you had a lot of different positions on campus was your experience.
Yeah, so being officially our advisors like to say take the first quarter easy or adjusting. It's a very quick paced system so it does take awhile to get adjusted an if you you know some majors will hit you right off the bat within the term as early as your second week. So you want to make sure that you have a handle on things before you add something on like a job and the same goes with an internship in research. I didn't start getting involved until my junior year when I felt very.
Put it in my studying and all of that, and then I went into working on campus. On campus. Jobs are nice because they will work around your schedule and you can kind of tell the Department how many hours you are able to work for that quarter. So you have a bit more flexibility with that. And also on campus jobs will limit you to know more than 19 1/2 hours per week so you're not overloading our self, but I definitely would recommend.
Just making sure that you know what your study habits are and what that looks like and there will also be a transitional period between your freshman and sophomore years when you're taking lower division courses and then when you transition into your upper division work for your major so definitely don't recommend doing what I did my first quarter of my junior year, which was work part time and do two internships. It's a lot to handle.
Oh, you want to make sure that you understand? Kind of like what the what your priorities will be an what your schedule is going to look like for individual quarters as well. But yeah, you can start taking advantage of the resources that we have your first quarter while you're kind of getting acclimated so that you know how to get get jobs on campus or internships. If you want to do that.

Have you guys ever been in a triple dorm? If so, how was your experience?
I think we had a question about living in a triple, um, our freshman year. We both lived in doubles uhm, so we each had to remain in our space. I also have lived in a triple. So in my sorority house I lived in a room with two other people and I have to say it was easier for me to live in a room with two others, and one because it it felt much less like a kind of work trying to split this in half. Versus like we all need to kind of come together to like have a cohesive space. There's a lot of compromise.
Um, that kind of happened when I lived in the triple again. That was an off campus housing situation. I know what the triples look like on campus. They're pretty spacious, so I wouldn't be too scared of being in a triple, but that's just my insight and my perspective. Laticia. Do you have any in some triples?
I'm so I had a lot of friends that lived in tercero, which is where a lot of the triples are and they got very creative with their spaces because the furniture is built to be kind of moved around and reorganized. You can make your bed into a lot. You can make him into bunk beds as well so you can move furniture around to open it up as you see fit. If you want to do yoga in the middle of the room, that that's kind of a way. You know that you can get creative and do that, but every floor on each of our dorms will also have like it's.

When can we apply for the Placement exams?
Oanh um Camino space as well so you can take advantage of the study lounge in the kitchenette and even the resources outside of the doors, but right located right next to each individual area where you can have access to computer labs and printers in tutoring as well so you have a bit more space that way. To be honest, I didn't spend very much time in my dorm throughout the year. I spent more on my time in the dorm just sleeping or after dinner.
Alex Svensson

Zahraa, you can learn more about placement exams via this link: https://registrar.ucdavis.edu/registration/schedule/placement-exams
We were host our friends from all over and just have like a quick coffee time for about an hour before we had like just went to bed. What's the time we spent it outside on campus and taking advantage of campus in clubs and hanging out with friends so?
Pretty suspicious, but yeah, it really depends on what you're looking for and there are a few different factors to take into consideration when you're looking at those. But the housing websites will have pretty good videos of what each housing area will look like. So once you look at those videos you can kind of see what's better. A better accommodation for yourself.
Russian there were questions load him up. We've got a few more minutes and we're happy to answer anything you have. If you have questions about the pictures, feel free to ask us. Um, there's lots of pictures of like this science lab building lots of different random things in here. I actually just got on my bike one day and biked around campus and took all of these. So sorry there a little amateur, but I wanted to give you a feel for what it looked like when you're just standing there on campus. No filter, no fancy editing or anything, just a girl in her phone, so.
That's what you're looking at, um, so hopefully give you a feel kind of like if you went on a tour and you're just kind of looking around. There's also the virtual tour option. And then I'm looking right now for info for housing so that you can explore the housing website and get a little more info. It's so descriptive on all the different housing options and all the different benefits of each one, which they're all very similar. They all offer the same entities, it's just about location and then car to is a little bit smaller and has sweet style.

06:41:03 PM
is there a way to see how an online lab class works at UCD?
Yeah, I think we had a question about labs. Uhm, so it's actually perfect timing. What we're looking at here on the screen is a rock Hall where a lot of our science based courses will be there. That's where I actually took my chemistry courses for my major. But the question is in regards to how lab courses are currently being given and is there a way to see it?
On my lap horse us at this point in time as stuff, all I know is that horses are being held remotely. I'm not sure what format they're using because we're not really Privy to what students are currently doing on campus and ******** regards to classes, but I think sometimes yeah, actually, I don't know. Do you have anything else to add, Devin?
I don't know. Uh, Mattson. Academic Affairs question. It's a little outside of our scope, unfortunately.
Uh, I think uhm there may be some information on Aggie experience life. If you weren't able to do that or attended last week, then there should be the recordings available to you, but I believe we had some colleges in major advisors on that event where they talked about horses and kind of how that is looking for, like for students and what to expect once you're on campus. Taking courses like that.
He had question about Greek Life Which.
OK, I'm say Yeah, but all you.
I'm happy to talk about reply. Uhm, I was in a sorority, my.
Elisabeth Siegal
06:42:31 PM
How prevalent is greek life?
Sophomore junior and senior years uhm you can rush as a freshman most students do go through recruitment as freshman I just wasn't really ready I didn't know enough about it and it just wasn't something I wanted to do I ended up meeting my best friend when I went through equipment we both win as sophomores so it worked out for us but everything is kind of changing but regardless about 10:11 percent of our students are Greek now keep in mind that's not just are the traditional social sororities and fraternities but also pre professional cultural and faith based service based things like that.
Uh, we have a lot of different. I think there's over 760 or 70 different Greek organizations. Majority of them are not going to be the social stories and fraternities. The ones that are, I would say they're not a stereotypical as you would see like in the show Greek or in movies or whatever. As crazy as those are, that's really not the Davis vibe being a part of Greek life in any capacity in any sort of Greek organization on campus is very much like being apart of any other club. They just kind of function differently in each one is very unique.
Isaac Ing
06:43:47 PM
Is it common for visiting scholars or researchers to and hold public seminars we can attend?
So I would encourage you to check out all the different options that are available so our office of our excuse me are Center for student involvement in our office for sorry in fraternity life both have expensive websites that kind of explain all the different organizations available. So like I said, I think of the Greek system I Davis as being kind of like being a part of a club, so that's why I lump in CSI and that because most students that are in Greek life, that's one of many things that there are part of like I was in Greek life. But I also was a tour guide and I also is on the newspaper and.

And I also had an internship. I did lots of different things. It wasn't just. It's not like your whole identity, and that's, I think a common thread amongst Greek students on campus. And again, only about 10%. So it's big enough that if you're part of it, it's substantial. But if you're not a part of it, you're definitely not going to be left out.
So, uhm, I know that Alex is giving as I can answer, but very quickly we do have visiting scholars and researchers come on campus. Are Confucius Institute Research Center will also holds like visitors from all over the world to talk about kind of Chinese culture for example. Because that's what that center kind of focuses on. But if you are interested in learning more about like politics, not necessarily being a political science major, but.
Being involved in politics in some sort of way, or even just interested in that we do have, are you see Sacramento program where they frequently request researchers and scholars to come and present to students about what they're doing, and so I know one misconception about this. And that is that you have to be a political science major. But actually there are a lot of science based majors in that because they want to see how the ethics work and in terms of the greater good and all that so, another opportunity for you to get hands on experience in terms of.
Internships and research, but also here other professional speak about it and we have our medical school which also hosts researchers and scholars talking about like the latest medical advancement in different fields available to UC Davis. UC Davis public, really.
Also keep in mind then Dobie Center Steve Wozniak spoke at the Mondavi Center when we were students. Uhm, so lots of random people Bill Clinton was there when we were students and he spoke. So lots of different random things that I think it depends on the Department. I would also encourage you to look at the Department page to see any visitors that they have coming, because like I said, there's over 100 different majors on campus and so many departments, so many different folks coming and going. So lots of opportunities to hear from incredible faculty whether it's.
Spoke there on campus or visiting.
Right, and even sometimes informal opportunities are found through clubs. So like the psychology club on campus, which I was a part of for a year, they frequently had researchers from other universities come over and talk to students about what their professional is.

What bike would you guys recommend bringing to Davis?
Alright, I saw crush not bikes which I I love. Biking. I love biking. As a student, I biked everywhere. It was a big part of my decision on where I lived was like I need to be able to bike to like these important places because I didn't want to run on the buses. But when you're looking at what kind of bike you should bring, don't go out and spend a ton of money on getting a brand new, fancy expensive bike because.
Alex Svensson

I don't like to highlight crime in Davis. We don't have a lot of crime, but there's a big, shiny, beautiful, expensive bike. It's more likely going to get snatched up, so if you want to go on to Craigslist and look for a good hearty hybrid, you can get it. Depends on your comfort level. I took a mountain bike 'cause That's what I always was used to. Writing a lot of people end up getting road bikes. I like going off of the curbs so it was better for me to have bigger tires. Sometimes people will get beach cruisers.
Honestly, I found them to be really find out really heavy, so when you're biking places, it's just sometimes takes more effort to get a heavier bike places so a hybrid would be the ideal situation so you're not on the really tiny tires and you're not as a little more comfortable to ride in a lot of cases, but you're not. It's not as heavy as like a mountain biker beach cruiser, so look for a used hybrid on Craigslist. Make sure it's got good tires on it if you have to replace the tires, that may be OK, and then you want to make sure that you don't have anything quick release on your bike and that's something if you take it into a bike shop they can help you.
Remove any quick, but the seat is going to be a big one. 'cause when someone steals a seat of your bike, that's just such a bummer. So just remove the quick release off that you're going to be good to go. I would encourage you to also check out the bike barn or taps, transportation and parking services for any tips about purchasing a bike. You can also order a bike online and pick it up when you get here. I would avoid getting a really cheap bike like going to Walmart in getting one if you can avoid it. Just 'cause sometimes they fall apart on you and you want reliable transportation and then the last thing I would say about getting a bike.
Zachary Boggeln
06:48:56 PM
How bad can the rain get, and what are your tips for rain?
Is make sure you get a Fender on the back of some kind. Uhm, we do get rain in Davis and if you don't have a Fender on your bike the rain will kick up an it'll kick all The Dirty mud and everything off the streets and wherever else right up your back and you're going to get with called the freshmen stripe. It's uncomfortable, it's kind of embarrassing. Just avoid it at all costs. Put a Fender on the back. It's less important in the front. You could put one if you want, but the back is going to be the key so you could they come in classic coming metal. They're not super cute, but there definitely useful.
So we do get rain like you were asking about how bad the rain gets. Tips for rain put a Fender on your bike. Um, you'll want some sort of rain jacket or windbreaker. You can't really bike with an umbrella, but I know laticia wasn't a bicyclist, so she probably use an umbrella more than me. If you take the bus, you can use an umbrella, since living here now. I've gotten an umbrella that has like event, so that when it's windy, the wind goes through it. So if you want to invest in a nice umbrella, you could do that too. But as a so Cal.
Alex Svensson
06:50:01 PM
Get good rain shoes!
Native living here. I have been able to tolerate it, so it can't be that bad.
My last recommendation. Alex beat me to it for that one, but now that I think about it waterproof gloves. Sometimes the rain can be cold in the winter. And if you're sensitive like VI, don't like having cold hands. So if you're going to be biking or even just walking with an umbrella, waterproof waterproof gloves are your best bet.
An rain shoes you can get rain boots if you want. I thought him awkward to bike with, but again not I mean, if you end up not liking, that's your choice. You can also get little ankle ones. I got some for $20. Uhm so you have the right gear. You're going to be fine. You're going to be living so close to everything you're you're barely going to even outside so.

did you have any trouble getting good direction from advisors? needed classes, career, etc.
I'm sorry, next question is did you have any trouble getting good direction from advisors and getting the needed classes or career oriented advice as well?
Devon Bohart
06:51:23 PM
You can also buy a bike at the bike auction https://taps.ucdavis.edu/bicycleprogram/events
So I guess I'll speak to my experience, so I being a psychology major, which is the most popular major on campus, I was able to make appointment with my counselor whenever I needed, even before it moved on to an online system. So I would make it a point to go see my counselor at least twice a year, once at the beginning and once at the end, just in case my goals changed, which they did in terms of double majoring in minoring. But they were really good in telling me. Kind of the different career aspects that I could.
Look into an like what departments are, what professors did talk to you? Another thing about your major Department is that you can also talk to student advisors who are going through the course. Is that even ahead of you? Because their upper division students usually, so they'll tell you waht recommendations they have for professors or even classes, depending on what your career goals are. And then we also have our internship and Career Center where you can talk to advisors in your area and we have four career fairs throughout the year where you can talk to employers about.
What they're looking for it for your particular career aspects, so there's a lot of resources on campus. Are advisors are really more than willing to help you. All you really have to do is go out and ask them, and you know, make sure that you're talking to them early about what you're envisioning yourself doing. Timing and communication is really key, especially if you're thinking about potentially changing your major or adding another major to your studies while you're here any.
Last minute, um advice that you'd like to add Devin.
Nikki Calub
06:52:56 PM
Could you go over the steps I'd need to take if I wanted to change my major?
We had a question about changing meters, which I'm going to jump to that one since it kind of in the same vein. It's pretty simple, especially if it's in the same college. So for example, going from psychology to sociology will not be particularly difficult versus going from psychology to bio engineering or something. Biosystems Engineering, for example, for changing your major. Once you've been a student at UC Davis for 1/4 and you're in good academic standing, you can submit a petition to have your major changed. I would encourage, and this is kind of.
Meline Norquist
06:53:39 PM
thanks
My advice is someone who's gone through UC Davis and I change my mind a lot of times it would be a terrible idea to wait to submit that petition until you're really confident. Maybe take a couple of quarters to take some classes, especially those that are relevant as possible to the major. Potentially going to change too, so that you can really make sure you're not going to have to keep submitting petitions to change. It will definitely be a lot easier if you're OK. I'm thinking sociology right now I'm inside. I'm going to take a couple intro to social classes, some lower division. See how I feel.
You may end up hating it, or you may randomly taken art history class and fall in love with it. You never know. Uhm, so just take some time. Even your first year. It's OK if you need to change your major work with your advisor. Make sure that they are aware that that, so they're not trying to set you up for a specific major, but yeah, that would be kind of my change of major advice, but it's pretty straightforward. I think it took me.
Few weeks to go from undeclared to declared only because my major had some lower division requirements, I had a complete so I had to prove that I complete them.
And one thing to know is that, UM, most if not all of our, uhm, uh, was it got resources on campus will be open to all of our majors, so you don't have to be pre Med or biology major to participate in our medical schools. Medical internships, you can art history and do that. Or you can be a theater and dance major and still participate in our research undergraduate Research Center and do your own research. There's actually a specific conference just for those types of majors on campus.
So you know, if you're not sure you're even thinking about changing your major talk to the other major advisor to see what that would entail. What that process looks like, what that that major looks like as a student in that major. And then you know, kind of even take that extra step. Take some courses, and even do an internship if you have the time and can in the bandwidth for it. But it's open to everything, so just make sure that you're not picking a major just because you think your resources are limited for a particular area.
Uhm, OK, we have a question about a student who's asking is for their first year too early to join a sport. I would say it depends on the sport. If you're looking to be like if you're going to try out to be on one of our Division One teams, you do need to keep in mind that is a pretty big time commitment.
Zahraa Jamshed
06:56:08 PM
Would you guys recommend joining a sport during your first year?
I not being a student athlete myself, I'm not really sure what that would look like. I just know it's a big time commitment. If you're looking at a club sport. Uhm, the time commitment for that would probably be comparable to a high school varsity sport. So if you're familiar with that kind of workload or practice load, I guess that would kind of be comparable. So if you're confident that you have a handle on your courses, I think the same. The same answer I gave for getting a job your first year. I think it really depends on the student and the well in this case this 4th.
You're applying to or? You're trying out for a while, but I think any. I mean depending on the suit you totally could. Our club sports are very like their clubs and you just have to make sure you can practice for Inter merrell's do it your first year. Heck yeah you just go to a couple practices. If you guys end up planting them and then you play the games that are in the evenings, hopefully they're not in the same time your classes. Those are just purely for fun.
Zahraa Jamshed
06:56:56 PM
How are the UCD chem courses?
Zahraa Jamshed
06:56:58 PM
Have you guys taken any biological courses? If so, what was your experience?
And I think we're wrapping up. We have a question in regards to, um, what the biology and the chemistry courses are like at UC Davis.
I'll go ahead and answer that 'cause I think I was the one who took him as oppose. Did you take any of those guys OK?
Driving had a lab and so did astronomy.
So I started premed as a student, a man, so I ended up taking biology and chemistry. I will say I officially hate chemistry because it just was not my strong suit, but the way that the courses are formatted on campus is that our science courses will have three components. They will have a lecture, a discussion in the lab lecture is like what you see are typically think of in a large University setting with like 200 students in one professor at the friends.
Being information within the one hour period and usually that happens anywhere from two to three times a week. A discussion section is about 20 to 30 students. It could be led by professor or a graduate student in that area and usually go over like homework problems, lab problems, or whatever it was covered in the lecture that you'd like more information on. And Lastly, your lab is really your hands on experience where it ties into what you learned in lecture that week, so.

Katherine, you'll want to check with housing for your question
Biology was pretty cool. Um, our life Sciences building is beautiful. I it has a greenhouse at the top. It has this interesting little structure where there's jellyfish in there and so that was more of my kind of nice. But chemistry was pictured in Rock Hopper in this slide show an rock Hall.

Well, it's, uh, one of the largest lecture halls on campus. an A lot of our students just go through it, but there are some great professors. Doctor enderly is one of the renowned and most well known professor on campus for our stem courses. So you'll get to take advantage of that. But that's kind of the quick format for science related courses.

Would you say the UCD culture feels more collaborative or competitive?
We had one more question. They wanted to address. I'm going to throw up this slide for you guys. Don't forget the deadline. SCR is May 1st.
Leticia Garay
06:59:42 PM
Katherine- make sure you and your roommate select the same preferences
Don't forget you have a week. We've got two more big webinars for you. We've got a Q&A a week from today and another one on the first. That's your absolute last day to decide to keep that in mind. And if you need to contact us other than the webinars, you can go to admissions that used to davis.edu and ask an advisor. Well, that's up. We're going to address our very last question, which is a good one to end on. Let's see, how would you say the UCD culture feels more collaborative or competitive.
Definitely collaborative. One of my favorite things to say is that you could literally walk into Electro Hall on the first week of school and come out with a study group by the end of your first lecture with students who are like, hey, let's meet up at the coffee house or the Coho's like we like to say, uh, students on campus and study for an hour and work together to fill out this study guide for the next midterm.
So students are very approachable, very friendly, more than eager to help you, and even meant for you in some cases. So for one of my internship opportunities, I had heard from other students in regards to specific departments to look into. So definitely the cool, friendly and chill vibe is applicable to UC Davis.
I, I think there's also a piece where there's a lot of students push each other to be better. UM, I, I say that it's very collaborative, but you definitely do feel the challenge of the rigor and of the high caliber of student that we do have a lot of really smart folks here. Fortunately, there not stepping on each other to get better. Of course, we do work together. I think my favorite part about I assume this isn't a lot of classes, but it was a lot in my major classes. Specifically was study guides that the whole class worked on together in Google Docs, so we would kind of kind of.
Put all of our brains together to make one massive study guide. We could all use to prepare for exams. Things like that. I just thought was a really. It really says a lot about our community and then the other thing is just. Overall outside of academics, people are really friendly. I had a friend who I won't tell you where he was coming from, but he came here and he was like people are so nice like he was almost confused at how nice we were and I was like it's it's our culture where healthy people were happy people. We've got lots of green foods were riding our bikes, we got endorphins.
We it's a really great place to live. Is this kind of little utopia here?
So yeah, it's a lot of friendly people, uhm?
Very collaborative, um Davis is wonderful I.
Excited that you all have the chance to enjoy it.
Um, and that's my PS let you see if you have anything you want ad for. We closeout.

The last thing I want to say is use those links. Use the website, explore all the things that Davis has to offer. Whatever is interesting to you, if it's athletics, if it's clubs. If it's you know miscellaneous. I don't even allow the Nat map. If that's really cool with you, check that out like just explore because you can't do it physically with us, so do it on our website.
