Yes, hi my name is Jamila Brown, one of the financial aid officers in the financial aid and Scholarships Office. I've been here about 10 years and I've been in financial aid almost 20 years little longer if I include my work study years, but.
Glad you're joining us today.
Our flow for today will include, well, we'll talk about the types of aid that are available. Will talk a little bit about my awards, what you need to do there.
We'll go into the privacy policy talk a little bit about scholarships, will talk a little bit about how the appeal process will work for this upcoming year.
We have a few important dates for you and at the end we'll talk about some of the online resources that we have available for you.
OK, so the types of aid that we have available, I'm include grants the federal grants, which are the Pell Grants CLG grants the state grants which include the Cal Grant.
The institutional grants, which is where the University grants fall under. We also include loans which we look at as an investment in your future.
Victoria Martelli
10:04:50 AM
Can you please make the slides bigger?
We have a work study program for students that are interested in working while they're going to school, and we also offer scholarships. So out of the types of aid that we have available, the grants and scholarships are the ones that are the ones that we would consider free aid that you do not have to pay back.
Mitsuko Leonard
10:05:19 AM
@victoria, there's a button on the top right of the screen that looks like 4 arrows...hit that
Ian Morris
10:05:29 AM
If I choose to live off-campus and pay around $15,000 annually for an apartment, will I receive less financial aid? If so, approximately how much will it affect my aid?
OK, let's dive into my words. So my words is a system that we use to communicate with students and so within your my words you'll be able to see what your estimated financial aid is. You'll be able to see if there's any important notices you'll be able to see, what your cost of attendance is, so it's really important on this first page on the summary page to make sure that you have the correct cost of attendance, and so we'll talk a little bit more about that later on.
But you just want to make sure you have the right cost of attendance. Make sure you're viewing all of the important notices that are out there.
Hayley Scott
10:05:49 AM
Will this be recorded then posted at a later date?
Mitsuko Leonard
10:06:16 AM
@Hayley, yes, it's being recorded and will be posted later this month
At the bottom of the summary page you'll see the estimated a broken down by quarter, and so for the fall quarter you'll see your aid breakdown there. So for this student you can see that they have the Cal Grant they have there plus longer loans there. Pell Grant this student is eligible for the Blue and Gold Plan. Their account grant falls under the blue gold. Also the Pell Grant. So really any free money is what would follow under the blue and gold plan.
And so this student does qualify.
Victoria Martelli
10:06:26 AM
I did and it doesn't really make a difference
OK, let's talk a little bit more about the cost of attendance so.
Mitsuko Leonard
10:06:48 AM
@Victoria, try CTRL +/- to zoom in and out
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:06:52 AM
@Ian there is around a $3500 difference in Cost for living on campus vs off campus. If you are currently on campus and go off campus your financial aid would be adjusted.
This is what I was mentioning that you need to make sure is correct. So whether you are an on campus student living in the residence halls, if you're living off campus, or you're living at home as commuter student, you just want to make sure you have the correct budget because it does affect the amount of aid that you have. If your budget is not correct, you can make a change to your a package by.
Submitting a change in aid form.
Adazsofia Lengyel
10:07:23 AM
Can you accept awards if you have not done your intent to register yet?
Look at your award package and how we determine what your financial aid will be is we take your cost of attendance. We subtract the contributions on the contributions. Is what we get for him from either your fax or your California JMC application and so.
Ian Morris
10:07:31 AM
How much can I borrow in subsidized loans every year?
That's what includes your expected family contribution, so we subtract those contributions an.
You're financially that you've been offered, and that's how we come up with your remaining cost. One thing to note here is your remaining costs can vary depending on a variety of things, so that can include your housing choice, your ship insurance, whether you take the ship insurance or not, your meal plan choice, and also whether or not you choose equitable access for your books or not.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:08:32 AM
@Ada No you would need to accept the SIR before completing your financial aid requirements
In late August is when the Bills will go out from student accounting and at that time you can click on the check current balance button at the bottom of your my awards screen and that will take you to your my bill. And so when you go into your my bill you'll be able to compare the financial aid that you've been offered with the actual charges that will show up on your account. And so some of those charges that you'll see in there will be your tuition and fees, your housing charges. If you're living on campus, the document theme and the ship insurance. If you choose to take the ship insurance.
And at that time you'll have a better understanding of what is actually do in September.
Joy Fisher
10:08:45 AM
@Ian, the maximum amount of subsidized loan that you will be offered, freshmen 3500, sophomore 4500, junior and senior 5500
We have a remaining cost example and so for this student.
Oonagh Connolly
10:09:05 AM
Where can we find information regarding loan interest rates? Does interest start collecting as soon as we take out a loan?
The charges that are showing in their my bill include their tuition and fees. They chose double occupancy for their housing option. They have the seven Day Meal plan with a $200 Aggie cash. They have decided to go with the Sea Ship insurance and they have the transportation distance learning fee on there as well as a document theme.
The document fee is for like printing charges, getting copies of transcripts, those kind of things.
All of those charges are showing in their my bill and so.
Jt Higgins
10:09:24 AM
Are there any additional aid for out of state students based on academics?
Next, we'll look at the financial aid that has been authorized so the financial aid they've completed, all of their documents. Everything is ready to go, and so when we say authorize, that means there's nothing left to complete. Everything is done. Everything is ready to disperse to their account, and so they have their cow ground. Here they have their Pell Grant. They have their University campus fee grant and their University grant.
After we subtract those authorized grants, they have her remaining cost of the $3807.00 and so some of the other options that can help cover that remaining costs include their loans. I'm so they have the Federal direct subsidized loan unsubsidized loan parent plus loan, which is alone that's under their parents name, not the students name. They have an outside scholarship for $500, and then they also had $500 in personal savings that they can apply.
Joy Fisher
10:10:17 AM
@Oonagh, you can visit this website: https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/loans/interest-rates to find out more about federal loans
Towards that remaining cost and so.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:10:18 AM
@Jt If you are eligible for scholarships based on your academics they would be listed on your MyAwards. We do not offer financial aid based on academics.
Lateef Wakil
10:10:32 AM
my son was not offered a parent plus loan just student loans. Is there help for single families that need a parent plus loan to help with extra costs.
And once we subtract those, they have remaining costs of $363 and so they can either choose to sign up for the deferred payment plan through the Student Accounting Office to break that payment down into three for the remaining remainder of the quarter, or they can choose to pay for it another way.
One more thing I would like to note here is the fee payment deadline for fall is September 15th, so that's the date that you need to make sure that you have enough to either cover your remaining remaining cost or you've signed up for the deferred payment plan before the 15th.
Ian Morris
10:11:18 AM
How will getting a job affect how much financial aid I can get?
They can request a loan and they can just reach out to your office or they can go through the loan process if they go ahead and find their their lender.
And start the process and then notify us that they've done that and we can connect the application on our end.
It would be through their bank or credit union, so the fax is only their their application. For you know the eight that they've been offered. So if there is an additional loan that they want to take, they would be either initiating that process with the bank or credit union.
And then, you know, going through their application process, approval process and then we can connect their application on our end.
OK, so on the award page of my awards is where you can see the different types of aid that you've been offered on this page. You can also see the.
The status of those awards, whether they're in accepted status or estimated status, some awards will be estimated, such as the Cal Grant, until we get the final current roster and later on towards closer to August.
Other grants will already be accepted for you. The loans will not be available to accept until July and so.
I'm come July. If you are interested in taking your loans, and that's when you'll be able to complete those requirements and then on the far side of the screen.
Joy Fisher
10:13:22 AM
@Ian, getting a job now would not be reported on your current FAFSA application since we report 2 years prior income information on the FAFSA. So it would not change your financial aid eligibility.
The status of your requirement. So if there is something that is pending that needs to be completed before that award will disperse, it will be indicated there.
OK, so let's go a little more in depth about the requirements and so on the requirement page.
Adazsofia Lengyel
10:14:04 AM
Can your estimated aid be changed/modified and how easy is it for that to happen? Also when would you find out about the change?
You'll see the actual requirements that are being requested of you. If you have her over that requirement, you'll be able to see what is more details on that requirement, and then if you click on it it will take you to the page to complete that requirement. Some of these requirements can include verification, citizenship, prior death, title for authorization. These are some of the requirements that you will see out there. As I mentioned earlier, you won't be able to accept the loans yet and so the requirements for the loans.
Will be grayed out until we get to July, then those will become available to complete in July.

10:14:21 AM
How will the recent UC Cyberattacks affect our financial aid application. How as freshmen applicants should we protect ourselves?
Jt Higgins
10:14:27 AM
For out of state students, are there specific scholarships from UC Davis specifically for out of state students?
Mitsuko Leonard
10:14:50 AM
@Emma, here's what UC Davis is providing as advice after that cyber attack - https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/update-accellion-cyberattack
OK, so let's say you have an outside scholarship that you received and you want to let us know that you are receiving this. We have a change in a request form where you can let us know what that outside resources, the amount that you're receiving, what quarters you'll be receiving them in. You can also make changes to your housing status or your enrollment status. So say you start out.
With 16 units you want to reduce your units 12 units. You can do that through the changing aid form here.
Another thing to note on this page is the third party authorization form, which is really important if you have a parent or other third third party that will be calling into our office.
You need to make sure that you have authorized them to or offer given authorization for us to discuss your financial aid package with them. This is because of the federal FERPA laws, which we'll talk about in a minute.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:15:30 AM
@Jt The Provost Award is awarded to out of state students for to learn about additional UC Scholarships you may visit: https://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/scholarships/campus/awards
Joy Fisher
10:15:35 AM
@Ada, yes your estimated aid could change if you have had a change in income, then you could pursue the Family contribution appeal which becomes available in July to have your aid eligibility reevaluated
OK, so Next up is the student privacy policy.
Sam Alagood
10:16:00 AM
What options does a student have to avoid debt if no grants or scholarships were offered? Are awards still being made?
And so this includes our third party authorization form. As I mentioned, this is a federal regulation, and so with that federal regulation, it's the FERPA laws. We do have to have your authorization in order to talk about your financial aid status and so you can complete this form through your mind words when contacting our office, but their party.
Who me I'm sorry, will need your party's name and pass phrase and then the student ID number and also the date of birth.
OK, so with the student privacy policy.
With a third party authorization form, we can release specific information, so this includes general financial aid information.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:16:41 AM
@Sam The financial aid available to you is what is offered. You may look into outside scholarships for additional funding: https://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/scholarships/outsidescholarships

What is CalGrant? How do we know if we have that award?
Which includes consumer information. Consumer information includes changes that may affect your aid disbursements and direct deposit. Satisfactory academic progress. Return of Title 4 funds, and refund policy. Xan rights and responsibilities. We can also discuss timelines and processes as well as financial aid options. The non financial aid information.
Sorry, the non financial aid application data that we can talk about includes the financial requirements, financial aid, appeals, loan documents and processing.

10:17:22 AM
Is there a number that we can phone to get in touch with a finical aid advisor. My EFC is 0 and we were not offered a parent plus loan. Thank you
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:17:23 AM
@Emma Cal Grant is a grant awarded by the California Student Aid Commission. For more information regarding Cal Grant eligibility, refer to the CSAC website.
By phone we can discuss where to find an, how to access information. We can confirm faster JMC application data that's already been provided. We can provide the status of non facile or non jamek application data and we can provide general information on the financially process.
By phone we cannot discuss specific financial aid figures and data such as expected family contribution.

What kind of positions are available for work study?
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:18:09 AM
@Jacob Handshake is a web service that connects UC Davis students with prospective on-campus and off-campus employers, allowing students to search for internships and jobs (including student employment and Work-Study).
Joy Fisher
10:18:13 AM
@Lateef, our number is 530-752-2390 and our contact hours are 9am-4pm
Values listed on the facts or California JMK application, so these include like the adjusted gross income, taxes, paying, etc. We can't go into details about specific values and we also cannot give refund amounts over the phone.
OK, let's talk about something fun so.
Jt Higgins
10:18:34 AM
Are there opportunities for work study to help with costs?
As for scholarships, your application for admissions was also your scholarship application, and the majority of the scholarships were awarded around the time of admission, so any additional scholarships will be awarded over the summer, so you'll be notified through email and you can also view them on your my awards.
Dayna Garcia
10:18:48 AM
I’ve tried emailing the financial aid office and I was directed to contact an expert but still never got a reply. How can I contact the financial aid office for specific questions?
We have the County Aggie Alumni Scholarship that closes June 4th, so make sure you apply for that.
And also apply for any applicable outside scholarships on our outside scholarship page. We have a list of many different scholarships that you can apply for, so it's a good starting place for outside scholarships.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:19:31 AM
@Jt You may find work-study opportunities through Handshake https://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/types/work-study
There's many different types of scholarships for all types of interest, qualifications, and talents. Many don't have academic needs or need requirements. There's a lot of them that are not tide to completing a faster or California jmac application. Many are merit based, so make sure that you are applying for many as many of those as possible. They do require time for searching and applying, so make sure that you are doing that now.
We have a link here for a scholarship page. Also check with your local and national organizations as well as any club that you're involved with or corporations that your parents may be a part of.

I applied for outside loans some of them do not advise until August. When do I have to notify for a fall semester any expected outside scholarships
So just make sure that there's a memo accompanying that check stating the student, your name, your full name, and your UC Davis student ID number.
OK, let's talk a little bit about the appeal process.
If your family has a special circumstance, including any special circumstances related to covid, we do have several appeals that you can complete to see if we can consider the changes to your family's income and so the family contribution contribution appeal is available July 1st. For entering students, we do do special, special, preliminary, family.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:21:24 AM
@Liana If you are applying for an outside loan they will notify our office to certify. We will begin posting the outside loans to accounts during August/September
Preliminary family contribution appeals and we can do that prior to May 1st and so.
The regular process for the Family contribution appeal, but starting.
Now, basically, where we're considering the changes to your financial situation due to the special circumstances. This is where you can find the form.
Ian Morris
10:21:45 AM
Are there any insurance work study jobs?
We also have the cost of attendance appeal and so the cost of the tenants appeal. We would be considering additional expenses that exceed the standard budget seen in my awards, so these can be for anything such as out of pocket, medical expenses and additional family member.
Loss of income due to retirement. Those are some of the examples of the things that we we can look at to consider.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval

How does work study work?
And September 15th is the fall fee payment deadline. So as I mentioned earlier, you need to make sure that you've completed everything that she needs to complete prior to September 15th. If you do have the remaining cost, you need to make sure that you've either made arrangements to pay that or.
You signed up for the deferred payment plan through the Student Accounting Office prior to the 15th.
And this state is really important, because if there isn't a payment plan in place or you haven't made arrangements to make that payment, you can be dropped from your classes. So just make sure that you've had you've taken care of everything prior to that that deadline.
Azeneth Huerta
10:23:39 AM

A few online resources that we have. We are on social media so we have a Facebook page, Instagram page, Twitter page, follower pages like this.

Hi @Daisy, I thought I heard Jamila say that scholarships are cointinuing to be awarded through the summer. Is that right or is what is currently offered all that is avaiable?
We also have our active little financial Wellness program and this is a program where our peer advisors. They have one on one Pier, 101 P, revising appointments with you. So if you need help setting up your budget for the fall quarter, you can make an appointment with them and to that we have a blog where they're they're posting money management tips. We also have a newsletter.
Which we'll talk a little bit more about on this next slide.
So under a great blue to gold financial Wellness program, we do many things throughout the academic year. We do different webinars on hopeful money management tips. One of the ones that we did was a budgeting and bullet journaling workshop. We do our annual budget kind event, which is an interactive budgeting event. This happens annually and this year we're doing a virtual option through zoom and so you are invited. If you're interested in joining us, you can find more information for this on our social media pages.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:25:00 AM
@Sam This year scholarships went out with scholarships with admission however, they may be awarding additional funding throughout the summer depending on students who attend
And I spoke a little bit earlier on the blog so you can check out our blogs that we have out there. You can make an appointment with one of our provisors. You could sign up for our Aggie political and Financial Wellness Newsletter.

10:25:27 AM
@Azeneth, you can start paying back your loans as soon as you would like to. There is no penalty for starting to pay off your loan early. Both federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans have a 6 month grace period after graduation before you have to start repayment but you can start early
OK so a few takeaways if you don't take away anything else today. Please take away these items so in my words make sure that you have completed all of your incomplete requirements. The remaining cost can differ depending on a variety of factors.

Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:25:40 AM
@Jt https://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/scholarships/campus
Any changes made using the change in a form can change your aid package, so just keep that in mind. If there is a change that you're making to your enrollment. If you're reporting an outside scholarship, these things can change your your aid package, so it's really important that you get it done as soon as possible and then reach out to us. If you have any questions.
Here you see application is also your scholarship application and so you are already being considered for all of the scholarships that we have available for the additional scholarships that we have. You will be notified by email if you receive any of those and you can view those in your my awards.
Faderera Popoola
10:26:13 AM
If we get a scholarship that is not related to school, do we still need to report that to the MyAwards section of our portal?
Apply for the Aggie Alumni scholarship. This closes June 4th, so make sure that you have applied.
And thank you for joining us. During this time we are working remotely, so the best way to reach us is through contact an expert. This is the link here.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:26:42 AM
@Fade if the scholarship is for educational expenses it would need to be reported
Reach out to us if you have questions we don't bite. We're here to help you. And yeah, we can answer a few questions.
Natalie Coury
10:27:29 AM
Can you appeal to be reconsidered for a scholarship?
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:29:01 AM
@Natalie for financial aid you can submit the Family Contribution Appeal based on a decrease in income (if you are a resident) If you are asking specifically about a scholarship you would need to contact scholarships directly: https://my.ucdavis.edu/ask_us/?topic_id=400
So basically you would you would be responsible for finding the job.
Sam Alagood
10:29:24 AM
Thanks @Daisy, are there ways to waive out of state tuition? research assistantships, other campus jobs, or other ways? (Not asking about becoming a resident - I'm not a resident)
Adazsofia Lengyel
10:29:49 AM
So we would decide how much of the money we make out of work study to put towards our tuition?
No, no, I think I was really connected.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:30:02 AM
@Sam Unless you become a resident with a request to the Registrar's Office you would be charged out of state tuition
Dayna Garcia
10:30:09 AM
Can we have our work study payments go directly to our tuition or housing?
OK, so the main difference is the interest on the subsidized loan is paid by.
Now you're in school on the unsubsidized loan. It's not, and so once I learn this versus that, interest starts accruing. So you can either choose to pay that interest, or you know you can let it accrue and pay it. Once you pay off the principle left alone, that's the main difference between the two that subsidizes them based one, and so there is a certain limit you can get in. Also, for the acceptance, there's a limit, but it's not need based, and so those are the main the main two differences for any of the Student Loans.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:30:38 AM
@Dayna No the payments would go directly to you, you could save the money to pay for future quarters
The repayment process starts six months after you graduate, so you go into your grace period. The six month grace period, and then that's when you would start the repayment.
And then right now the loans have been deferred because of kovid repayment for loans, so.
Liana Duran
10:30:46 AM
I will be a resident my second year, I am moving to Sacramento in June. Can I request a waiver for out of state for my first year
Hopefully it will be by the time you graduate, but.
OK, so for for those type of plans they would actually go through the cashier's office and so it would be looked at as a resource. And so when we are calculating your financial aid it does come into consideration, but you would start the process with the cashier's office and then we would be notified on our end that you have that.
As soon as possible so you know if you know that you have those funds coming, you can complete the change in aid form and let us know that you have that resource coming.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:32:07 AM
@Liana You will need to contact the Registrar's Office to receive an answer as they have a process you go through: https://registrar.ucdavis.edu/tuition/residence
Yes they can. And so September 15th is the fee payment deadline. So we have the deferred payment plan, which is a plan through the Student Accounting Office. And with that plan students can basically breakdown their payment in 2/3. So the first month you know you'll the 1st, 3rd and so on and so that does have to be set up before the fee payment deadline. So prior to September 15th you would set that up with student accounting through your my bill.
Joy Fisher
10:32:46 AM
@Ada, if you are hired for a federal work study position, the award is part of your financial aid package but is treated a little bit differently since you earn the federal work study funds. The work study funds are also not paid out to you in a lump sum as you would be paid monthly so the funds could be used for whatever expenses you may have (tuition, rent, etc)
The bill for the fall will come out closer to target.
Around the 20th of August, so choice at the end of August is when you'll see the bills, and so by that time the fees should be, you know, as accurate as they can be at that time.
Darsh Parikh
10:33:20 AM
By what date we need to pay Tuition and Housing . does that happen quarterly or annually?
That sounds about right, yes?
So yeah, it's just really important to set that up if you are doing the deferred payment plan prior to the 15th.
Joy Fisher
10:33:54 AM
@Darsh, tuition and housing is paid quarterly
Yes, yes, and then if you do have questions about that, my bill, part of the process you would just reach out to the Student Accounting Office. They have a lot of good information on their webpage as well.
And on how to set everything up.
Yes, that is correct, and so throughout the summer scholarships will be awarding for those smaller scholarships and so you'll be notified by email if you are receiving one and then, as I mentioned in the presentation, we have a link on our scholarship page for outside scholarships, and so that's a good place to start to look for outside scholarships. You can filter it.
By category, so say you're interested in agricultural scholarships or scholarships. For science students, you know you can. You can filter it in there and see which ones are applicable for that.
Item and then you'll get a list of scholarships to apply for.
Liana Duran
10:35:34 AM
Will the awards cover orientation fees
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval
10:35:55 AM
@Liana No your awards do not cover orientation fees
Gunnar Honour
10:36:22 AM
Due you need to change your financial aid if you are planning on changing from off campus to on campus
OK, so for any UC scholarships, that process actually starts over each year and so we start the scholarship application gear out so once you get here on the fall, the scholarship application will open for the University scholarships for the following fall and so at that point you would need to apply for any University scholarships and so.
What will have advertisements about that? I'm on our social media as to when that date will open till typically is October 1st when the scholarship application opened as well as the factor in the California Dreaming application. They're open October 1st, but.
Daisey Jeannette Sandoval

@Gunnar Yes you need to notify our office of any housing changes as your aid is adjusted
Basically, you would do the application process for all of those every year it will be an annual application, so starting this fall you apply for the scholarship. The scholarships for any scholarships as well as the California Mac application or faster. So each year you'll you'll be applying for those.

Work study isn't listed in my awards section, but I received the CalFresh letter in my notifications that states I qualify for work study for the 2021-2022 year. How can I confirm my eligibility?
I'm going to have a gram.

@Iris You will not have work study posted onto your account until you have a work-study position.
Yes, so for well, at the sea level we we have federal funding that would be applicable to non resident students. But we also have a page that specifically dedicated to students that are out of Steam.

Hi @ Daisy, it seems that a UCD degree as out of state will cost over a quarter-million dollars. Working would be a drop in the bucket, the scholarships that could still come through are a drop in the bucket. I have good grades, test scores, and extracurriculars, but not that kind of money and don't want to start a career with that kind of debt. Am I missing anything? Is sounds like UCD is just not intended for out of state students like me.
You can put that in the chat for you, but it has a link to all of the different types of events available for students that are non non residents.
So put that in the chat down.

Between out-of-state an in state students.
OK, so with the federal loans that interest rates are fixed and they are typically lower than the loans from a private a private loan.

And so if you can take the federal loans first, we recommend taking those first, and then you know if you do need to take additional loans with some of the things to look at, make sure that it's a fixed interest rate. Make sure that.
a factors but you know, check them all out. See which one would be the most beneficial to you.
