Alright, let's go ahead and get started. Hello everybody and welcome from all over the country and the world. We're so pleased to have you with us tonight my name is Jacqueline Ross an I'm an undergraduate admissions and I am broadcasting from the beautiful UC Davis campus and we hope to welcome you here in person pretty soon as well, but for tonight let's just enjoy our time together and let me introduce you also to my colleagues that are on the chat with us.
So we have Executive Director Ebony Lewis. We have Nancy Aldrete, Devon Bohart, Candy Jean, Bruno Lasker Arrow, Liliana Mendoza, Ann Veronica did Sendejas and we also have some of our wonderful tour guides that are coming on with us. So you have the flavor of current UC Davis students as well.

04:31:09 PM
Hello everyone. Welcome new Aggies!!!!
I will be presenting to you, walking you through some of the key features of what we have to offer at UC Davis and our life. Here we are a big group tonight. I will leave it at that. I'm not going to tell you how many, but because of the size we're going to be on what's called moderated chat. So our folks are going to be behind the scenes reading your questions and then they will move them to chat and answer them. Don't panic if your question doesn't get read or answer right away will be covering quite a bit in the time that we have.
I would appreciate it if you just give yourself some time to focus on listening and it's a great time to practice notetaking as well. We have also looked at the questions that you've submitted ahead of time and will incorporate some of those answers for you. For anybody who would like to use the closed captioning feature, please know it does use predictive text, which makes it not 100% perfect, but I think it will be helpful for you for reading.
Paige Hendrix
04:32:11 PM
will this be recorded?
And a last note or two on housekeeping. There's a lot of information out there on your my admissions page for all of your enrollment related tasks, so we encourage you to check that often. And we also want to let you know that much of the communication that will be coming to you from the campus will come via UC Davis email at the address that you provided, OK?
So I'm working. Here we go.
Nancy Alderete
04:32:40 PM
@Paige- yes it will be recorded and shared a bit later.
While we are in a wonderful season of celebrating you as spring emerges, so does our hope from this very unusual year. Anuar the light at the end of the tunnel. Believe me we are so pleased. We're so excited.
Do you have been reading about you and finally get to say welcome and come to UC Davis? So we really are celebrating. You were celebrating your hard work. We're celebrating your trials and your triumphs, your persistence, your wild dreams. You're grounded. Compassion and all the places that you call home.
And we want to tell you a bit about the place that we call home here in the County of Yolo in Northern California at the North End of the Sacramento Valley.
We are in the traditional lands of the Patwin people, and there are three federally recognized Patwin tribes, including the Cacilda. He band of Wintoon, Indians of the Colusa Indian community. The clips LD he went to nation of Cortina and the Yocha Dehi went to nation out near Ramsey in the beautiful Khappay Valley an appear on the right is a picture of the KP. This is one of the gorgeous places here on campus looking up towards the Sky and this is our reflective garden on campus and.
Honor of the Wyntoon people. And if you come out here, I think you'll find it's a beautiful meditative space and you'll enjoy seeing some of the food and fiber plants that are used in the area and also signage in three languages. So it's an unusual and special space for us is good people. These local Wyntoon people have remained committed to the stewardship of this land over many centuries, and it's been cherished and protectors as elders passed down and instruct information to the young people were so honored and grateful to be here on these traditional homelands.
So transformation is a big part of what's coming up in your future, and we certainly have lived through it this year, and I would not have imagined at this time last year that Davis would become the lead campus nationwide for covid testing and monitoring to protect our students and our whole host city. But that's really what research and passion will do for you when you get that energy behind you do amazing things.
And here in this picture we see some students exploring on their own, doing some original research. So on the left is one of the wind tunnel stations in our College of Engineering. The middle picture has a student studying eelgrass out of the Badaga Bay Marine Lab and then the upper right is are very highly featured. An anticipated coffee lab in chemical engineering, so there's a lot of different ways to learn and we really are curious to know what your next transformation.
We want you to think about the kind of scholarship that you'll have and you dive into it. Davis really has a hands on approach of learning in and outside of the classroom. You're going to get to fix and build and invent and tweak and cause some really good mistakes and risk taking involves mistakes in breaking things and bouncing back. We have labs. We have fields, we have herds, we have, vessels, bays, studios, workshops, all kinds of different settings.
She really helped you reach into the future and see what you want to pull out of it, so I hope you'll enjoy this. If you're an indoors person, there's plenty to enjoy in laboratories and so forth, but if you really love learning out of doors, we have amazing resources in that area as well.
We hope that you're gonna want to dive into scholarship. It does involve all the things listed on this picture, analysis creation, solving things, exploring things you're going to be asking questions big and small that are going to lead to Revelation and Discovery. You're going to start off in a major that's housed one of our four colleges. In answer to a question that came in, we want to say that even if you're already sidetracked or fascinated by another major, you have hope you do need to stay in the major that you entered.
For one term, but talk to your advisor about your other feelings in your thoughts toward those other majors.
Second majors or double majors are allowed in some cases. Again, that's a good conversation with your advisors to make sure that you're really doing too desperate paths of study. Sometimes you can combine those two areas into one that makes sense to you and will make sense to your advisors as well. There's also really good ways to explore all of it out there. You know we have over 100 majors, so there's so many choices, and some of them will really tempt you, so ways to satisfy that, or to take the beginners courses that are offered in almost every field.
Look at taking low unit seminars. Talk to faculty, anybody that's teaching has office hours, and you can schedule or drop in and talk to faculty members that are doing something that utterly fascinates you. And all of these people can help you. And basically at Davis just ask, see where it leads. But that's the main thing. Getting good communication going from the beginning.
There are also number of partners out in the world that help our students were so grateful to the people that provide internships in out of campus even in other States and countries were also really grateful for partners locali that do so much for our students, like the folks over at the Capitol, all the legislators, all the agencies that offer offer opportunity for our students in the middle picture here. This is a shot of Lake Tahoe where we have an Environmental Research center which is.
Absolutely wonderful and on the right a shot of the Bodega Bay Marine Lab and Reserve an incredible research facility right on the edge of the ocean in Sonoma County. And we do have classes over there and we also have some residence halls over there.
UC Davis has what we believe is the most extensive research program in the United States. If you want to explore a field of interest and get credit an on the job experience, you go to the internship and Career Center and see what they have in your area. If you have an idea in mind, but there's not a formal internship for that yet, you can make that happen. Talk to our advisors over there. We also have a wonderful teaching hospital and health campus just a few minutes away over in Sacramento, and we also have graduated.
Professional schools and employers that reach out to us and keep us up to date on what they want and exploring through an internship is a great way to signal to those folks that you're serious about your field and you've put in the time to really discover what it's about.
Now, some students were asking about what major is best for going into medicine or going into law. So we wanted to show you this slide is an example of one of our great pre professional advising programs. So this one happens to be for health and health for us means human health and animal health as well. So if you're interested in becoming a veterinarian or OB Gy N or physicians assistant or pharmacist, all of these future career paths are encompassed and attended to within health.
Amazing, so this could be one of the people are one of the places that you add to your team along with your academic advisor as you're going to connect with somebody at health professions advising if you want to go into the health field and their counterparts or law in business and numerous other fields. Plus wonderful graduate advisors. So think about how you can use that extra advice. Advising circle in. Build your team out.
We do want you also to think about how you're going to enjoy your college life. There is a lot to do here. When I was a student here, I just could not believe how the time flew past and there were still so many things that I was interested in and had never tried. So do pay, pay attention and give yourself that important work life balance when you're in school with us. Think about what makes you happy, what gives you peace? What energizes you and then shop accordingly. Our students do enjoy a very convivial environment here at UC Davis.
I like that you can have space and quiet when you need it.
And great people time when you want that as well. We have over 800 clubs, a fabulous coffee house, a wonderful athletics and a very welcoming community. So there's so much to do here in good ways to balance out in a way that makes you happy and feel energized to learn.
We also have an amazing incoming class.
Wait, you tell us what you've told us what you're going to do really. Sometimes just leaves us speechless and we want you to relish your strengths and also look for the strings and other people we do have and build on a collaborative community here and take time to acknowledge your own strings. You have no idea, really. I think how your stories and experiences are going to stay with us long after the admissions process. We do foster inclusion and opportunity here. We all want to grow and we do want to prepare you for the real world.
Liliana Mendoza
04:42:20 PM
@Varshene there are a lot of great supports for students who are pre-health. We have the Prehealth Advising Center and various clinics students can intern and learn through hands-on experience.
Now life and living on campus I think is something special I have to confess. When I came in as a freshman, this was not a part of campus that I was looking forward to and I was so pleasantly surprised really. From the first day that I moved into the residence halls. It is a big part of life on campus. It's not mandatory. OK, you don't have to live on campus if you don't want to and you may feel. Be ready or just need to be out on your own and local housing and that is fine. But if you're wondering what you might get from living on campus, you have almost instant community.
Varshene Sivaprakash
04:42:26 PM
Is there a health hospital in campus - for student to get practical training
There are living learning communities that you can take a look at and within the learning living communities which are kind of themed communities. There's one program where you do have to live on campus and so that residency requirement is in place for the Honors program.
students are very welcome to, you know, take a general dohrman, take a general program and come in that way.
Students in the residence halls do seem to gain, I think, a better social and academic immersion, and there is wonderful food in the dining Commons. Much of it is locally sourced.

Will we have an opportunity to meet with advisors during Aggie 101 and leading up to orientation? If so, will they just be the academic advisors, or career advisors as well?
Let me share a little bit about life in the Davis community. Davis really is California's college town, and it's a sweet and generous community. It's bicycle and pedestrian wheelchair friendly. You're going to assume become familiar faces to each other. If you say yes to Davis and the global community is really invested in the campus. I'm Davis is the largest UC Davis is the largest employer in the County of Yolo. Many people come to enjoy the performing arts, the civic events, and the numerous cafes and snacks.
So how do we support you in the journey? You know what's going to come along, and one of the most important key supports for most students is financial aid, but also other ways of keeping your basic needs met when you come to school as a public University that serves California, we do serve our students in many different ways, and you're seeing an example here. I haven't heard of another campus that does this, but we have an incredible student farm and our students that work out there.
Lavanya Biju
04:44:15 PM
Is there a doctor's office on campus to go for general check ups or any minor issues that arise for myself?
Grow organic produce for you so you show up once a week with your tote bag and you can load up on fresh organic produce that traveled.
Just a few yards across campus really, so it's wonderful to get that benefit in there and stay very healthy. We also have a student pantry which is shown there on the left and if cash is a bit low in a given week you can come and pick up some items to kind of round out your larger, which is good. And we do want you to look at your student body card and see how that's used in the area. Flex those student discounts. Enjoy campus produced entertainment as well.

@Adrian- Jacquelyn is amazing! :)
The Financial Aid Office is a great resource for you. We are really very gratified to have such incredible people over there working hard for our students. Over half of our students graduate with absolutely no student loan debt. We have wonderful you see blue and Gold Opportunity Program, which covers in state tuition and fees for family incomes up to $80,000. And there's also an Aggie Grant program for family incomes up to $120,000 that covers about 25%.
Of our in state tuition, an fees you do want to learn about your financial resources and as you plan for your college costs, you do want to connect with financial aid and scholarship office. They are very responsive, especially through their ask an expert contact button on their page.

How do we apply/get into the Honors program at UC Davis?
And we have a lot of local scholarships that are available. Numerous campus jobs and jobs that are offered locali and also some scholarship search resources. If you have filed your FAFSA or your California DREAM Act application, please check your my awards section through your my admissions page.
Adele Handan
04:46:12 PM
Are there other scholarships outside of the ones that were on the UC application?
We do want you to prepare for your career. We know that it's not enough to roll out of here with an incredible GPA. Employers and graduate schools and professional schools really look for those extras that have become Essential's. So you do have opportunity to connect with alumni that are out there in the world. You have the ability to talk to your professors about what they see happening in your field. You can use our wonderful career services at the internship and Career Center. You also can take.
Wonderful workshops and conferences that are extraneous to your field and make those connections that are so important. Our students do all these things. I think the payoff is pretty good for them just looking at the statistics that we have here, but I know that they do work hard at this. So do you make those connections? I've even talked to?
People of my colleagues out in the field and and they have just stopped me mid presentation, said Jacqueline. This is so true. I coasted through college, never talked to my faculty members about what I wanted to do and when I went for my first job, one of the things that they asked me was for a faculty recommendation and I didn't have.
Julie Daseking - Tour Guide
04:47:08 PM
@Abigail I'm actually in the University Honors Program! If you are interested in applying and meet the academic requirements, the application process for the Honors program will occur towards the end of your freshman year. If accepted, you would start in UHP your sophomore year.
So don't let that happen to you. Everybody here is really invested in the success of our students, so please make those connections. It can be hard. I think sometimes for those of us that are naturally a little shy. But we can also walk you through that. You know how to approach people and make it more comfortable for you, OK?
Liliana Mendoza
04:47:42 PM
@Isabella you have to apply for the FAFSA or CADAA to see if you are eligible for the Blue and Gold Program.
There are some great next steps that you can do to help make your college choice and also plan for where you're going to be in a year. So please continue attending virtual events like this one. Explore the social media, make sure that you're getting satisfied with the answers that you that you need and the exploration that you have.

In the middle of this very exciting, sometimes chaotic time. Maybe you're sitting there with tan college. Admittance is in front of you. Take time to listen to your own reactions. Just take a deep breath.
Katrine Razniak - Tour Guide
04:48:00 PM
@Brandon - Aggie 101 is an online experience that give you an introduction to UC Davis and the resources provided. There will be advising windows during the summer where you will be able to talk to academic advisors before registration for classes begin. You are welcome to schedule an appointment with an ICC (Internship and Career Center) advisor for more career/work advice at UC Davis closer to fall quarter. I scheduled an appointment with an ICC counselor a couple of days before classes started my freshman year!
You have some quiet space to now. Those other voices that are trying to tell you where you go and just listen to your heart and how you feel.
Nancy Alderete
04:48:15 PM
@Adele- please visit: https://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/scholarships
I'm big into sleuthing. Also sneak around on those college web pages. Find those projects that you're interested in. Find out who's teaching them, look at what the graduate students are doing for research, and always, please feel free to ask us questions.
We're a little offbeat ourselves at times, so we're not going to get too surprised, I think, but we do want to make sure that you're happy. We want to make sure that this is the right choice for you.
Brandon Nguyen
04:49:03 PM
Thank you Katrine!
Let me talk to you for a moment about this wonderful program that you are embarking on today, adding experience live that will run today through Saturday, April 3rd and so this is our way of connecting with you and satisfying your curiosity while we're still a bit isolated. So today of course was colleges and majors 101 so I hope you've enjoyed and will continue and continue to enjoy what's been offered on this opening day. Tomorrow is really so critical, I think for everybody.
So if you can make some of the programs on financial aid and scholarships, please do that specially so you know what's expected, what's potentially out there. Some of the extras that you can do on Wednesday, such a fun day. This is going to be student support in campus communities, and our students are such a big part of this experience and something I think that's not well known is that many of the attributes that make the Davis campus extra special. Are you sras UCD coffee house?
Julie Daseking - Tour Guide
04:49:37 PM
@ Isabella the University Honors Program offers students a number of benefits including ability to live in the UHP Living Learning Community your freshman year, priority registration for classes, and access to smaller (~25 student) honors courses. You can learn more by visiting https://honors.ucdavis.edu/
Our Unitrans bus system. Those were student conceived ideas. Those don't come up through administration in the traditional way, so Davis is always listened to the ideas of students and.

Ally Andre - Tour Guide
04:50:05 PM
@Isabella the Honors Program also provides lots of opportunities to network with professors and get involved in research, which I have enjoyed. However, you don't have to be in the honors program to get these benefits, as our professors always are excited to help all students get involved!
Of our best inventions have come from from that the source of energy. So please go to that day if you can. Thursday is one of the days that people are extra curious about, of course, because housing and food and student life aren't essentiels for us. So housing is prepared to share some wonderful facts and specifics about how the program's going to run in the coming year and then on the final day you're going to get a chance to see how to make connections and really plan for the kind of interaction and networking that you want on campus. So I think you will love that.
There's some great resource fairs just going to be a really, really good day. So again today through Saturday. For Aggie experience live.
Liliana Mendoza
04:50:31 PM
@Deena We have the LGBTQIA Resource Center that is great at connecting students with resources and community agencies to support students in various areas such as mental health and housing: https://lgbtqia.ucdavis.edu/

What supports are on campus for transgender students in making housing decisions?
Heesoo Lee
04:50:55 PM
If we missed a previous session, is there a way to view it? Were they recorded?
Now let me tell you a bit also about dates. Specific dates for the spring, time for you. OK, so May 1st is what we call the statement of intent to register or the SIRC deadline. This tends to be a national deadline so many colleges across the country do look at that May 1st date, so please give us your yes or that other answer by May 1st. OK, that's an important day. Then after you do that it triggers.
Nancy Alderete
04:51:04 PM
@Audrey- Our articulation agreement can be found at assist.org for all of our California Community College coursework that will transfer over.
Some other deadlines that are coming up so the housing deadline is May 6.
Ally Andre - Tour Guide
04:51:36 PM
@Heesoo our sessions are being recorded, and several are having encore presentations later in the week, so you may get another chance to attend live!
Hey again, it's not mandatory to live on campus and the only special program where you do you have to live on campus is if you get invited and accepted into the Honors program. Otherwise housing on campus is up to you, but there are some enticing choices out there. There was a question about parking, parking on campus. If you're living in the residence halls is nothing warm for us and we have very few spots for that. You can however request a special exemption if you need to have your car on campus for a personal reason. There is also some local.
I opted not to bring a car and found that my transportation needs were completely met. We have such wonderful transportation in and out of the city and the County. Easy transportation, airports, even great transportation down to the Bay Area. So it was all pretty tailor made for me and would be very happy to talk to you about that.
Audrey Mattoon
04:52:17 PM
Are there clubs or organizations related to environmental science?
There's also some questions about roommates and things I think they're going to do the best job of answering that on the 2nd, but there is a process for selecting roommates or talking about your preferences. If you and her friend have identified each other and you absolutely want to room together, no question about it. You've talked about it, your likes, your dislikes, the do's and don'ts. You do need to request each other through the housing process. OK, to make that happen.
Edwin Salazar
04:52:38 PM
Will you be able to live on campus with a roommate?
Let me talk just for a moment about orientation. Alright, so orientation basically getting to know the ground before you come in will take place in three parts this year. So right after you give us your sirf, then you're going to get queued into getting to go into AGI 101, so that will happen in May, and that's a basic ran tation to to life at Davis, then over the summer you're going to get your advising.
And you're advising will hit on another critical component for so many of us, which is worrying about our classes. Our first term classes. So during the advising you're going to get your advising appointment online and you will start registering for your classes in Davis has what's called a pass system. I think it's a good equitable system. It gives everybody a first run at your basic core of classes, and then in your next right you get some add ONS and that really helps balance out opportunity for all of our students regardless of year or major.
Ally Andre - Tour Guide
04:53:53 PM
@Audrey Yes! We have a TON of clubs related to environmentalism, as we are one of the most sustainable universities in the world. You can check out our AggieLife website to browse all of our student organizations
Now when you're looking at your courses for the first time, I think there's a temptation to just throw everything in your basket and run with a big full load. But your advisors are going to say, hey, you know what? Give yourself a little bit of time. Choose wisely. One thing to think about, and some of you asked about that or what? What is the difference between semester system in the quarter system?
Rheiana Mirazen Cuevas
04:53:59 PM
What about meal plans?
Well, there's some big differences in the main one is that there's a difference in time, right? So most semester systems are 16 to 18 weeks are Porter system is 10 weeks. We start in late September. We go to about mid December and get a short winter break. We come back in January. We go to about the end of March, get a tiny spring break, then we come back and we go into the second week of June and then you get this beautiful long summer.
Sydney Aguirre
04:54:51 PM
Hi Julie, it is my understanding that you can get into the honors program at the start of your sophomore year but not sooner. Is this factual or did I misunderstand the response you had to a previous question?
To travel to work to take that great internship to go to a development program at a campus. Maybe an industry camp, something really enticing and delightful to do. I love that long summer the quarter system was a little rough on me for the first term. I must say because I was a procrastinator. Then I am not now but I was in the quarter system kind of work that out of me. When you're in your second or third week of class and you have a midterm do it's a bit of a wake up.
All right, so we want you to get prepared for that. The flip side of it though, is that you're not carrying 6 to 8 classes, right? You are in Class A full time load is considered about 13 1/2 hours in Class A week, or 13, half 13 1/2 unit quarter. So that means that you're more around three classes in a seminar for that. For that unit load. And so you really focus in and you pare down on your classes, and you zero in on with.
Liliana Mendoza
04:55:33 PM
There are multiple people asking questions about financial aid, please check out the Financial Aid and Scholarships sessions https://ua.ucdavis.edu/portal/fael-wednesday
Being taught in those you're not trying to juggle so many classes. Maybe as you are now, so it's nice. It's nice to have that focus on that if you don't love the class, or you find that you're kind of not in the field that is most interesting to you. It was ten weeks right? And you can. You can change course if you did love that class, then the next good bite is sitting in that next that next term so you can move pretty quickly up into your specialty, so that's interesting too.

@Rheiana All students who live in the residence halls are required to have meal plans, but we have 3 different options. There is a 7 day plan, and two 5 day plans (which is great if you like to eat out or go home on weekends). The dining commons are unlimited on the days you have the meal plan, so you can eat as many or as few meals as you want. I loved the flexibility!

@Edwin - Normally, you are able to choose to live in either a single, double, or triple. You are able to choose your roommate(s) and are guaranteed to get a room with that individual or individuals. You can also go random - which is what I did and I'm still currently rooming with my freshman year roommate today. :) Student Housing is still working out how next fall quarter will look like as we are trying to keep everyone as safe as possible.
If you decide along the way that you do want to change your major again, you have to stay in the in your turn in your term with your major. The first term for one quarter, but after that you can petition to switch majors and you do need to settle on your final major by your junior year. It's not uncommon to have a couple of passions that pull you this way and that I want to encourage you also to think about minors. Minors are kind of your side dishes right there. Just a few classes of specialty work.

Is Fall 2021 planning to be on campus so far?
Julie Daseking - Tour Guide
04:56:45 PM
@Sydney Hi! Incoming UCD students may either be invited to join the University Honors Program with their offer of admission, or have the option to apply during their freshman year. High potential first-year students will be invited to apply to UHP during the Winter Quarter of their first year. Application invitations are sent in mid-Winter Quarter, and admissions decisions announced in mid-April. You can find more information here: https://honors.ucdavis.edu/admissions
In another Department, people put these together in beautifully creative ways, and sometimes business and industry like that combination. So you might look out there and see not only what are recommended majors for certain areas, but what they would accept as minor, and that's a great way to satisfy a side interest or strengthen your main direction, OK?
And then finally the third part of the orientation for you is going to be in person when you come to school. So that's Aggie orientation and that will run the 17th through the 21st of September, and our classes will start on Wednesday, September 22nd. Alright, afinal? Note couple people asked about transcripts, so transcripts from all the high schools or colleges attended are due to us by July 1st, right?
Adele Handan
04:57:32 PM
Are there different costs depending on how many roommates you have?
Nancy Alderete
04:57:35 PM
@Amrita- yes that is the plan so far.
Sahar Jandaghi Alaei
04:57:36 PM
During what years can you travel abroad?
So transcription all high schools or colleges attended all of them. We need those coming to us from those institutions by July 1st. If you have any official test scores that you'd like to report to us, would like to have those by July 15th unless something comes up administratively, in which case we get a notice about that and will act accordingly. But try to get those two as by July 15.

OK, alright and so I see that chat has been and run it hot over there.

when do admitted freshmen start classes or get to campus?
But I'm wondering at this time if you have any additional questions, or Devin if you're seeing a trend towards a topic that we should discuss live or that you might want to. And Wild Evans are getting ready to come on here, we're just going to flash up. Here are basic undergraduate admissions contact number an also are asking advice or website for you. Might wanna take a screenshot 'cause if you want to ask us something later will be there for you. So what do you have Miss Devon?
Ally Andre - Tour Guide
04:58:25 PM
@Adele Yes, living with others lowers the cost
You can hear me OK, right? Just want to make sure. OK, great. We've had a whole bunch of questions and I've snagged a few of those.
Edwin Salazar
04:58:36 PM
How many meals do you have per day in your meal plans?
The the first one I want to address. A lot of people are asking about. If this is going to be recorded. Yes, it's recorded. Where will it be? I believe it will be available on our website so you can check there. I will have to refer to our other staff members for the exact specifics if they want to go ahead and drop a link or anything like that, that would be really helpful. But to answer all those questions, I'm seeing lots of those. Yes, you will have access to this afterwards, but Jacqueline I had.
A question following up to you were talking about orientation and majors. There was a question about how if you could change your major faster if you were undeclared.
Can you change your major faster? If you're undeclared? I have never heard that that is a thing.
Mackenzie Pelletier
04:59:49 PM
Hello, I signed up for the "Things to Know About Financial Aid" meeting on 3/31 and 4/3, however, I realized today that I am unable to attend both due to a volunteer opportunity that came up. Would I be able to receive a recording of this event via email? This topic is really interesting and important to me.
Right, that is a bonus, or a minus, but I do want to say that I admire the undeclared or their exploratory choice, because what you're basically signaling to us is that you are multi talented and you haven't landed yet, right? And that is fine. That's a very honest place to begin and it really helps your advisor to know that. Of course, if you came into the letters and science you went, you went into in a particular direction for undeclared, right? Like humanities or physical Sciences, if you came into the College of Egg, you went into general exploratory.
And all those are really good beginning places, so so good questions for your advisor to ask. You know what? What is attracted you when you think you're interested in that? You have a handful of things that you're curious about. Are you genuinely? I have no place to start. I just want to be at Davis. Those are all good things to think about and think about what you might want to try. You know, look out there. Seminars are really a great way to explore. Our seminars tend to be thinking the two unit range. So a couple of hours a week, but what a nice way to.
Get an overview of the field and try that, but I don't think being undeclared or exploratory gives you a jump on you know ahead of anybody else to change it at all.
Right, yeah, I actually so to introduce myself folks. I am an alumni as well. From the class of 2015.

@Mackenzie Yes, those Fin. Aid sessions will be available after April 12th.
I came in undeclared myself way back when, so I came in and declared and I ended up being a communication major with a minor in management economics, which kind of addresses the follow up question. I had a student ask if they can major in one college and then have a minor in a different one.
Yes, yeah yeah, you certainly you certainly.
Yes, that was me. That was me and a lot of other folks.

@Sahar - you are welcome to study abroad any year! :) I know people who have studied abroad as soon as their freshman year, although definitely start planning early and talk to the UC Davis Global Learning Hub if you are interested. We have an amazing study abroad program through UC Davis and UCEAP (which is connected with all of the UC's). I got to study abroad my sophomore year summer and absolutely loved it!
Yeah, did you do that too? Yeah, so it's yeah, it's it's absolutely actually I would say it's probably encouraged. That's one of the better reasons to to go broadly out there is to look at the major and minor. I mean, I was just a case at one point I was double major double minor and I assumed this world out of that Whirlpool, which was good. But I'm like, Devin, I came in really set like I knew exactly exactly what I thought I wanted to do in the first class I took.
Nancy Alderete

Where is not as exciting as I wanted and I could see other people around me looking and were like do we really want this? And so the professor was very astute and very attuned to the class and by the second class he said, OK, I'm just going to stop and tell you what we do in this field.
And so he did, he said, this is what this is, you know, this is a field that's taught this way at Davis, and it's taught other ways at other campuses. This is what we're going to do. This is the experience that you can have. These are the internships you can have. This is the direction we go if you want to do XY and Z. We also do that on campus, just not here and he saved me so much time. I was really grateful for that. And that was my first big heads up that the professors care more about your happiness than their own numbers. So that really was very satisfying for me. And after that I can.

05:02:35 PM
@ Hamza - We would encourage students to go to their myadmissions page and submit a grade update so the admissions office can review the students entire application before making a decision.
Jumped over into a field that was much more satisfying, so it's so good to be have instructors that exhibit that depth of character, and I've always been grateful for that. And do students do sample around a bit? Devin, did you change majors once, or did you give yourself even more space?
Nancy Alderete
05:02:41 PM
@Neyri- Here is the link for a breakdown of fee schedules: https://housing.ucdavis.edu/_pdf/s/2021-residence-hall-fee-schedule.pdf
I actually picked pretty quickly communication.
In man, but I did take a lot of Gen Ed courses and I did have to take 5 lower division prerequisite courses before I could declare the Comm major. That was just kind of the process. I don't know if that's still the case because this was I don't know 2012 or 13 so it was a bit ago, but I took a lot of really random classes and I was I love the GE kind of component. Most colleges have the Gen Ed requirements for graduation. I just love the way Davis is situated.
I took so many really random classes and I think it makes for. If nothing else, some really great.
Ice Breakers are conversation starters. Talk to people I know lots of random information now about tractors and astronomy and nutrition an acting an I had so much fun taking all those courses outside of my major. So yeah.
Ryenne Wen
05:03:50 PM
Can we take classes for credit at a community college during this summer?
Yeah, and when else are you going to get a chance to do this in your lives? People college is really a huge huge field. You have so much permission to experiment and to try new things and we really want you to take advantage of that while you're here. I want to say a word about General Ed because I hear people.
Rheiana Mirazen Cuevas
05:04:14 PM
When do we get to meet our advisors?
Out in the world can go in general an and they don't get excited about it, but those courses are really designed for laypeople. If you will. It's designed for people that aren't experts yet. They're designed to give you really good broad knowledge and not get tunnel vision in your area. Your major, and they're also designed to keep your writing strong.

@Ryenne - Yes we do allow students to take summer courses at a community college before starting UC Davis in the Fall.
Adele Handan
05:04:39 PM
Does UC Davis allow for a gap year? If so, can you take courses at a community college?
And that writing component is such a big part of Graduate School, professional school and careers jobs out there. Leaving college and not being a strong writer is not your best position. So Gen Ed classes really reinforced that, and that's part of our instructional philosophy.
Ally Andre - Tour Guide
05:04:41 PM
@Rheiana You will get to meet with an advisor this summer as part of the orientation process
Katrine Razniak - Tour Guide
05:04:58 PM
@Audrey - you have a major advisor for you specific major (if it's a larger major it might be organized by your last name) and academic advisors for each individual college which you have access to as well! There are peer advisors for each major and college where you can get advising from current students.
And that kind of perfectly segues to a question that I saw about students graduating on time or in four years. I graduated in four years and I could have graduated in three, but I just love being on campus so much that I found other things to do and took more miscellaneous courses, added my minor but Jacqueline. Do you have any other kind of advice or?
Anything about graduating in that four year timeframe?
Julie Daseking - Tour Guide
05:05:27 PM
@Adele Yes, you can defer your enrollment for up to one year. However, during this time you cannot take courses at any other institutions.
What I hear mostly friends from students or whatever, heard mostly from students over the years, is that extension of time happens because you find out about great things. Just when you think you're ready to leave. And I hear that from a lot of students and so really focus what you're doing by being here tonight and getting a heads up on things like travel in internships and so forth as you're already priming your mind.
Nancy Alderete
05:05:43 PM
@Lavanya- you are correct. The fee schedule will be posted a bit later, but it will not deviate too much from this: https://housing.ucdavis.edu/_pdf/s/2021-residence-hall-fee-schedule.pdf
Michael Bunte
05:05:58 PM
Will Aggie Orientation from Sept 17 to 21 be virtual or in person?
Liliana Mendoza
05:06:01 PM
@Isabella Yes, you enter your grades on the application but you must also submit official transcripts and test scores (if you have them).
For that broader view, and it's not too much to sit down with your advisor, your first advisors, even when you come in and say, yes, you know this is my major. This is what I want to do, but I would also like to travel. I think I want to do a couple of internships if you want to get involved with XYZ Club, I want to do these other things and those academic advisors can also help you plan that out, and you can work on on a long range plan. So plan for your freshman year, but also the plan for how you get to the end of four years.
So I do see some students extending their time beyond four years. It is absolutely doable.
But for example, if I just went along my freshman and sophomore year and didn't really do any internships or anything, kind of coasting into my junior year, moving into my upper division core courses, and then decided that I wanted to travel.
Natalie Coury
05:06:28 PM
Is there still an opportunity to apply or be admitted to the Honors Program for Freshman year, or would we need to wait until the end of freshman year to apply?
Joseline Ayala Arellano
05:06:38 PM
In terms of finding a job during college, will our advisors help us on that?
Veronica Zendejas
05:06:46 PM
@Michale - Aggie Orientation is a five day, on campus program that begins after Residence Hall move-in. If the program changes for any reason students will be notified via email.
And that travel kind of disrupts my academic plan. I'm going to spend a little bit more time and I just told him myself, 'cause I did that so students, students do want to add some things in and it's just good to ask at the front end. There's very little again, that's just a little too wild for us to to contemplate. So we do have students that make it out in four years. And we've done two or three internships, and they've had clinical experiences. You're kind of doing an academic Tetris, right? You're trying to get everything to fit in, but you can. And we're here for you for that, don't.
Nancy Alderete

@Normando - some great ways to get to SF are the Amtrack (there is a station in downtown Davis a 10min walk from campus), the Davis Berkeley Shuttle, and ride shares.
I'm seeing a lot of questions about can we double major? Can I double major in this an I'm just going to clear that up really quickly. Yes. Double majors. You can do a double major, but do keep in mind depending on if there's a lot of overlap or not, it could extend that time frame that Jacqueline was just talking about. So you will need to just kind of be cognizant of that and work with your advisors. There's no like restrictions that I know about. If you want like you cannot double major in anything that doesn't exist, so.

Seeing if you can double major in two specific things, anything is almost anything is possible, but you have to keep in mind your time frame to graduation and working with your advisors and having your GS completed as well. So all that keep that in mind.
Sahar Jandaghi Alaei
05:07:59 PM
Could you go over housing complexes and what the benefits for living in each are? Thank you
Uhm, so I will. I think Jacqueline. It's time to kind of move away from majors and I want to move more to the Davis community, and that's kind of the town. I had a question a lot earlier. Is as Davis a safe place?

@Audrey the ratio is 20:1 https://www.ucdavis.edu/about
Audrey Mattoon
05:08:22 PM
What is the student-faculty ratio?
I feel that Davis is a safe place. I think that sometimes it is so safe in appearance that people drop their normal caution and that's not a good idea. Colleges are very attractive places, right? We have lots of young, bright, beautiful people running around and there is such a feeling of safety and community here that sometimes people forget to do like the basics like let people know where you're going.
Ally Andre - Tour Guide

@Sahar- There are many options to choose from. This is a list of some of our Living Learning and Shared- Interest Communities. https://housing.ucdavis.edu/academics/living-learning-communities/2020-21
Don't be walking home late at night by yourself. Some of those really sensible things. Part of the reason that there's a safety orientation in the residence halls is to keep you alert to that. And we do have a wonderful Police Department and fire Department on campus to get to ensure safety. And we also have some things built in like a safe ride program and I've used them. I will sometimes work really late on campus if I'm coming out of the office at two or two in the morning or one in the morning. And I know I have to cross, you know, over a parking lot, I'm going to call him up and not feel bad about it. 'cause they're there for my safety.

05:09:26 PM
What is process like for choosing a minor?
Nargiz Adil
05:09:31 PM
Hello! Are students permitted to select the residence hall of their choice? As well as choose their roommates?
So it's good to know I'm how to behave safely on campus an if you've never lived in an if Davis is big, big for you, then the approach safety. That way, if Davis is really small compared to where you're coming from, then learn those things to an and learn the safety measures and pay attention to that stuff. Overall, I think our biggest crime cluster, if you will, is bicycle theft.
Danny Kim
05:09:38 PM
Will dorms still have multiple people per room or will each dorm room only have 1 person due to covid restrictions.
Which is very inconvenient, so pay attention to bike safety as well, and we don't have a lot of serious crime, but stuff does happen, so be alert and get good training about that.
And watch out for each other.
Isaiah Orlando
05:09:56 PM
Can you speak with an advisor before you submit your SIR?
Liliana Mendoza
05:10:01 PM
@Trisha you can change majors between colleges but you should speak to an advisor to begin that process.
Absolutely, and I will add I had the same bike for four years. I didn't have a single part stolen from it. It helps having an older bike. It helps not having something big and flashy. It also helps to remove the quick release functions like on the seat and stuff.
So that's those are my general bike tips, but I.

05:10:14 PM

Alrighty so we have a question about internships in finding internships. Jacqueline, do you have any insight for that? I think the internship in Career Center. I don't know if you mentioned that already, but that's a big part of it.
Veronica Zendejas
05:10:58 PM
@Megan - Move in day will be right before Aggie Orientation so you are already on campus. Aggie Orientation is Sept 17-21.
Yes yeah internship and Career Center, otherwise known as ICC. They're pretty amazing and I'll tell you a little bit about my experience with them, so they have a number of advisors in the advisors have specialty areas, right like social science and humanities were for STEM fields or whatever an I wandered into there after I finish school and was looking looking at other jobs and so forth. And I wandered in there one day 'cause I over heard somebody in the bookstore talking about taking the Department.
Julie Daseking - Tour Guide
05:11:34 PM
@Aimee there are 3 meal plans for freshman students living in the residence halls: a 7-day plan and two 5-day plans. The 5-day plans are either Sun-Thurs or Mon-Fri.
Ally Andre - Tour Guide
05:11:42 PM
@Nargiz While you won't be able to select your specific residence hall, you can choose your roommate, and we have living learning communities that you can choose if you'd like to live with other students who share your identity or interests.
Taking the test for the State Department like to work in an embassy or something? Well that's it. That's interesting. Is the more I eavesdropped. They're more interested in. I gotta say this is ridiculous. Go ask a pro. So I went over to the ICC and I talked to somebody there who had actually taken the test and had the study guides for me and even knew where to park at the testing sites and just had such deep knowledge. And I just started asking other questions and he knew everything is and why that is amazing. So a lot of the advisors in the ICC have tried things themselves. They have specialty areas 'cause they're deeply interested in it.

@Ariana - for minors, typically I would recommend setting up an appointment with a minor advisor to figure out how to fit that minor into your schedule. As soon as you are registered for your last class that you need to take for the minor, you submit a form online and get your minor approved!
Abigail Madla
05:12:13 PM
Are in-person tours currently available?
And they know that great practical bridge between the academic and the real life job. So they are extraordinary, and they're very available. They like to meet with students. If you leave this session and go out and look at internships and Career Center at UC Davis, I think you'll be impressed with all the different things that you can do. They've been amazing during Kovid as well. The way they've they've pivoted onto virtual is pretty incredible, so they can lead you to really good things.
Julie Daseking - Tour Guide
05:12:26 PM
@Alexis yes campus is primarily flat, which makes biking a great option!
And you know internships are so valuable for some people, it cements what you thought you wanted the whole time and other people you're in there like what is this? I need to run away as fast as I can. This is nothing that I thought it was and so you can do a 180 and get out of there and that saves you time as well. So internships there really such a gift. They really are so we want it. We want to see you get in there. They also do workshops on things like.
Candy Giambruno
05:12:40 PM
@Alexis- it is flat, so you should be fine.
Social media, what you should have and should not have on your social media. Just lots of different specific good practical stuff. So when I can I drop in on their sessions and always learn something they're extraordinary.

Which I was like. This is such a I never would have thought to do this. It was not a good fit for me. I'm not a very secretive person, but it was really great. Kind of having these opportunities to learn about different kinds of job opportunities. And that was all kind of built into the ICC. So I'm a big component. A big proponent? Excuse me of that resource, but I'm seeing a lot of questions Jacquelyn about, well, we be virtual in the fall. Can we go virtual in the fall? What does that look like?
We are planning for being in person in the fall. As far as I know, I've heard nothing to the contrary. I have been watching the news as as you probably all have the last couple of days and our our health experts or a bit concerned about what's going on out there with the code right now.

Where can we look into virtual tours?
Really, the prime campus in the whole country about saying you know what? It's not just about us and our students. We want to bubble over this whole community so they have. I mean, the powers that be have just been amazing here about protecting the campus in the community, but there's that's a semi permeable membrane, right? There's people coming in and out, so we're going to be watching that really, really closely we have.
We want to be as safe as possible, so right now we're we're hoping for an planning for in person instruction and.
That's that's what my faith is writing on as well. We will also be very communicative about that, though if anything changes.
Jack Owen. Do you know if students can be virtual if they want to? Even if we are not?
I have not heard that. Have you heard anything of it?

My understanding is that it's not going to be an option. However, in the path, Davis has always offered some courses virtually prior to the pandemic, so I don't know what courses you're trying to take, but I would imagine you could potentially take some or a lot of them virtually, but I don't have a definitive answer, but my understanding is that if we're we're not virtual.

That said, we've had some very crafty innovation teaching. Virtually there's things being done now that people weren't even thinking about a year ago. So although it's not exactly the same as being in person, there have been some some really good inroads into making the virtual instruction interesting and exciting. I'm learning tools I never thought I would learn, so I'm having fun with that to working with students.

@Coco you can change your major starting after your first quarter at Davis
So fingers crossed hopes held high that we will be in person in the fall.

05:15:58 PM
@Ruben- yes, you are not bound to a set schedule to be in and out of the dorms.
Sam, I like when its campus is thriving and busy and active. I love it so much.
Uhm, we have a question about class size, so a lot. Can you share a little bit about class size?
Pranshu Jindal
05:16:12 PM
How can we access tutoring service and support if we are still virtual in Fall 2021?
We are largest class site at Davis I think is in, you know, Devin, I think it's the newest of our classrooms can hold about.
At least yeah, in that range I think, and the smallest class sizes can be.
610 just depends. Some of the specialty classes in your upper division area can be really, really small an. I've had a range of them. I will say that the average tends to be, I think, under 75 people per class for a lot of our classes in there, and I think of it in a bit as a funnel. Like a lot of people come in wanting psychology.
Manager Lee Conomiques or.
Engineering classes or something like that. So at the beginning, because everybody's trying to get the basics, you see some of those larger classes that professors are very adept at making those classes personable. The classrooms are acoustically divine, there's not a bad seat in the house, and those in those classes, especially the new in the more newbuildings. It's incredible. They have great devices, you can plug him right at your tables and see right in front of you what's up above in the classes, so they are really, really good and the weight of the classes arranged you don't feel like you're in a big.

@Pranshu I actually work as a tutor for the university, so I know that they have done a great job of moving these services online. Tutors have been available on a drop-in and appointment basis over Zoom all year, and I expect that this would continue if we had to remain virtual
Steve Auditorium there really gentle and you know, there's a. There's actually a sense of physical energy and community. Even in those large classes, it's really good, but you're not going to have the large classes for very long if you have them at all. They do start to funnel down pretty quickly as people shift majors and switch interests in there, so I wouldn't expect large classes really past the first year or so unless you're switching into a major where you're kind of starting at the beginning again, in which case you might. But Devin mentioned the prerequisite.
Classes that she took to move into communications, and those are there as a safeguard for you. So if you if you want to switch majors and they're like, hey, hold off, we want you to take XYZ's to make sure that you know what you're getting into and that you can handle the material.

05:18:28 PM
Can you be hired as a tutor as a first year student?
And then if everything is satisfactory on that, then that the migration migration can happen into that new major. In there, I will say that in large classes, if you want to be anonymous, it's almost. It's a little too easy to be that way, and that's why a lot of professors will put in participation points or participation credits like you must ask questions. You must go to session and ask questions in your smaller session. And almost all those big classes breakdown into discussion groups or lab groups of 20 to 30 people.
So that's where a lot of people are most comfortable with the interaction. My my tip is if you're in a larger class and that you that just feels too big to you, sit down in the front, 'cause then you don't see people in front of you right there all behind. You sit down in the front. Just make yourself ask a question. Make yourself go to office hours and that's a way to bring that scale down for you. And the smaller classes there was nowhere to hide. You are gonna get called on. You're going to get pulled into Socratic discussion. You better be on point and ready. Read your assignments.
Do not go to class. Not having read the book, it was kind of a surprise to me that you're never going to be in a college class and they're going to say OK today we're just going to read they don't do that, right? You? You are expected to do your reading outside the class and come ready to engage. So that's a little bit different too. And to get used to that, I think classes I was reflecting yesterday. I was thinking about this out of all the classes that took. I took it Davis. There were only two professors that I didn't really enjoy so much, and one of them ended up helping a friend of mine get her PhD and she was glorious with her, so that might have been more me.
And the teacher and the other one. He scared the heck out of me. But wow, I became such a better writer for his course.

Are there any any restrictions when it comes to students going in and out of campus?
Julie Daseking - Tour Guide
05:20:17 PM
@Angel students can come and go on campus. If you live in the residence halls, your Aggie ID card will allow you into your residence hall at any time of day/night.
You know, so those were the two that I was kind of. All the rest really good and even the two that I were in I was in. I had a lot of benefit from so give it a shot. Give it a chance.
Ally Andre - Tour Guide
05:20:29 PM
@Adele Yes, you can. The Academic Assistance and Tutoring Center requires that students get a B+ or better in the class that they want to tutor. After completing a class or series of classes with these grades, you can apply! My roommate actually started tutoring as a first year, so it can be done
Good segue into what might be our last question. It's 520 and I know that's kind of the time that we have slated for the event, but I'm going to go ahead and ask this last question, and we'll see how we're feeling.
You should ask if classes are chosen for you or if you get to choose some or all of them.
Raven Oca
05:20:43 PM
how often do people steal bikes or parts of bikes?
Preferably in coordination with your advisor and a lot of times you do have a choice. Now there are. There are core classes for your major that you must take, right? So if you want to think of that as you have in your classes chosen for you, yes, there are star specific requirements, but they're quite often some options.

Where can we find resources for work study opportunities?
Rania Alnamrouti
05:21:27 PM
in dorms are there any floors/building thats only for girls/boys ?
Like I'm going to go down this path, but I have the option of a, B or C course. Which one of those directions do I want to go into? Or I could take statistical analysis or a different kind of analysis if I'm headed towards research, so there is a lot of choice. I would say all the way along the basic classes that are set as your core classes are there for a really good reason. That's the foundation of your house, so take him, don't argue with him, but after that you get some really good choice.
That will be the same for your GS as well, so the GS are very broad and there's the breadth and the depth two components of the GS, and so one is going to require you to take certain number of units in areas outside your major. So for me I was in the social Sciences, so I had to take a certain number of units in the physical and engineering areas. What they were called, but I took nutrition astronomy, tractor driving. My statistics course met that so.

How easy is it to get work-study at UCDavis?
All fun things, nothing scary and then arts humanities courses and I took comparative literature and acting and things like that. So I got to pick all of those myself. Obviously some of the deciding factors will be who's teaching it. There's a certain professor you want, or the time or or day of the week, so those things will all kind of be factors, but you will ultimately be choosing almost everything. Some of the majors that are more like.
Blas Guerrero
05:22:51 PM
@ Raven. My suggestion is to bring a "low-key" bike with a GOOD LOCK and you will be fine.
Engineering may have some more like a longer list of required courses, so you'll have to look at the major checklist. So for anyone who is interested in what courses are going to be required or options are going to be available within your major, the magic words to search for our major checklist so you can kind of see what that will look like. It could shift a bit between now and your graduation, but typically you can work with advisors and they'll.
Walk you right through it and we'll make sure you're all situated, but that will kind of give you an idea of what you may be taking, and then the things that you will be required to take versus what you get to choose.
